husaberg 570 fuel economy

taffy, the alleged improved economy claims on the aggressive setting are made by kato 690r riders. mind you, there's a big difference between the settings on the 690 compared to the berg.

!I am keen to purchase one of the rear mounted tanks but at the moment I feel they are grossly over priced.

buying the 570 new blew my budget so the cost of the tanks was way too high for me too so looked at budget options. i settled on a heavy duty 30 liter dry bag with a rubberized finish. i cut rubber strips and used double-sided tape to stick these to the rear fender where the bag makes contact. then just use octopus straps under the seat and on to the rear indicator stalks (also helps with stopping the rear tail seciion flopping around so much). bought a flat based 5 liter jerry can with the opening at the top. the dry bag easily folds down to hold the jerry can and a few tools etc. i'll strap it down so the jerry can is mainly sitting on the rear part of the seat to minimize its impact on the subframe/fender. will need to work out an extra security strap in case the indicator stalks fail.

should extend the fuel range by 70% for long adventure rides, thinking of a flat based 10 liter jerry can like below for more than double the range. not sure if that might be too much weight for plastic subframe though. and it would definitely need more than octopus straps. gonna trial the setup first but can post results and pics etc if anyone is interested. total cost so far is:
- 30L dry bag $39
- 5L flat based jerry can $19
- octopus straps $20

lot cheaper than the aftermarket tanks. :D

how to access that last 0.5 liters of fuel?

had the offer of spare fuel from riders intentionally set out on a long ride, a mix of easy dirt and lots of soft sand. the reserve light came on at 130km so took it easy after that and she spluttered to a halt at 160km so good to know there's 30km or so as reserve.

interesting to see that there was still fuel in all four low parts of the tank though. i tilted the bike over and this gave me enough extra fuel to get to the service station 1km away.

it took 8 liters to fill it up, so assuming the berg statistics of an 8.5 liter tank are accurate, i still had 0.5 liters left in those low parts of the tank! that is still another 10km of fuel so just wondering does anyone have any tips on how to access it?

i'll run the tank dry again some time future to experiment with this, but it would be a very handy final "reserve" to know which way to tilt the bike and get all of that final 0.5 liter heading for the engine!

and just for the hell of it, a bit of berg **** from the trip....

Hoosie, don't tie off to the indicators. They're simply not strong enough to hold 5 liters of fuel. Look under the rear fender, and just aft of the end of the seat you will see a bolt on either side of the subframe. Take 4 or 5 inches of nylon webbing and using a soldering iron, burn a hole about a half-inch from either end. Fold it over so the holes line up, and use that bolt and a washer to bolt your new tie-down loop to the subframe. Do that on both sides, and you've got tie-down points that are way stronger than the indicator stalks.

thanks for the tip, ruger. the jerry can sits as forward as possible on the actual seat so the its the straps running under the seat that mainly hold the weight. all the light stuff is at the back to minimize stress to the indicator stalks and wobbly rear section.

any chance you might be able to take a pic of where you have bolted to? i think i know which bolts you are talking about but keen to see how you've set yours up.

Hoosie, I've got an even better idea. What I said before remains good advice. I have a Moose tail bag mounted to my 570 via those small bolts under the fender, but there's a much stronger mount point. Pull your seat and look at the two bolts at the far aft end of the subframe that bolt the subframe to the fender. I have a Tugger strap mounted there, and it's strong enough to horse the rear of the bike around. Do what I said with the nylon webbing, shove them underneath the subframe and above the fender, run the subframe bolts down through the holes in the webbing, and snug down to pull the whole structure tight. You won't have any problems with strength, I assure you.

Ruger, can you post any pics of how you have your tail bag mounted? I bought the Moose bolt on tail bag but haven't really been able to find a good way to install it.

Hoosie and Electrified, I can post pictures but I have to take them first. Need to get the 570 out in the daylight for it...

ruger, that mounting option under the seat sounds brilliant. unfortunately won't have time to rig it up for tomorrow's trip but will definitely get it happening when i get back and take some pics if i rig it up right.

still having problems dealing with the excessively high levels of awesomeness with the 570. big day out yesterday in tight gnarly muddy tracks, then off on a three day 600 mile adventure ride tomorrow. very happy to find a bike that does both so well (once you deal with luggage and fuel capacity issues).

OK, guys, here are the photos you requested.
Got any questions?

Ahhh...now I see how you bolted it on. I bought the Moose tail bag that bolts directly to the rear fender and I was hoping you had the same one but yours is the one with the straps. I think I am going to give up on this bag and just get the one with the straps.

Thanks for the pics.

In retrospect, I wonder if I might have done better with small paniers rather than that tail bag. The 570 has me beat on inseem, and under some conditions that tail bag gets in the way when I'm trying to get on. Side paniers would solve that problem, carry more, and would even protect the bodywork in a fall. Just thinking.

I have an 2011 FS 570 and get around 100+ per tank ,and not being easy on it either I have an Akra comp. map/slip on/seat mod/and 14/42 gears ,and my FE 570 motard with same mods except a JD tuner is also around the same mpg.
