Getting pretty jacked up for Moab and wanting to have everything working this metal I've had of late in my oil was really starting to freak me out. Since there is no BOSS or Motoxotica near, a desperate call was placed to Buzzard up in Montrose, Co. With steady assurance that nothing was wrong an appointment eas scheduled for yesterday at "The Buzzard Works" After a nice two plus hour drive up from Durango in the AM I arrived to Ron Walton's smiling face and a hot cup of coffee. I kept my oil screen out so the quantity of metal could be checked (some was steel) again I was assured that it was probably not too big of a deal, but we needed to look at the top end. In no time we had the bike (2000 FE 501) on the stand and stripped down. After close examination buzzard found that one lobe on the cam is getting some wear and shedding some steel. Decided it wasn't too bad and the cam should make it through Moab, out came the dremel, fine machine oil, emory cloth, and lastly polishing compound and wheel. You really have to know which one we did to see the wear. Unfortunately the water pump gasket was wasted as was the stator cover O ring. "Don't worry" says the buzzard "we'll call Brett, he has the same year and model as you" Toot sweet Brett is over with the parts and is on my bike like a swarm checking drive chain rollers etc..... Got all done around 4:00 PM had a couple of cold ones test ride. READY FOR MOAB NOW BABY ! Both guys will be at Moab and you won't find nicer I can't thank you two enough I can't remeber the last time I learned so much in one day. The Doc. is great and so are the pictures, just not quite as good as being there. These two are HARD CORE Berg-o-philes Thanks guys owe you big time!!

That's a great story Stoveguy! Very cool when the Husa Bros can get together for a little problem solving session. Too bad Cheeseberger didn't drop by! 8)

I've been spoiled by living so close to BOSS, (15 min. drive). A few years ago when he worked at a nearby shop, Rick dropped by after work to help me with some starting/ jetting issues. He finished up by starting my former bike, 2002 fe501, using his hand on the kickstarter lever. Just over a year ago. I was having some other issues with the same bike. Rick says, bring it over this evening and I'll help you out. I showed up and the first thing Rick says, "I hope you haven't eaten cause I've got a steak and potato on the BBQ and there's a cool one in the fridge"!

Hope that wasn't a hijack, just nice to be in the Husa Bros. community!

stoveguy,
i don't mean to be a downer but [i'm no expert] the cam will continue to come apart. its a hardened surface which is now gone. you need to get a new cam and rocker [or roller assembly at least]. right now the cost isnt that great but...???
remember those metal pieces go all thru the motor, screwing up bearings etc.
just my 2 cents since i was in the same boat.
boss had all the parts i needed in stock.
see you at moab!

So what I want to know is if Rick is going to offer a clinic at Moab "how to give your left leg a rest- a primer on the proper state of tune" I will pay!

:D

Tuts, thanks for the input I'm checking out some performance cams right now. Every thing on the cam has been cleaned up and should get me through Moab then I'll be changing directly after. Log no hijack here unless you got a towel wrapped around your head

Tuts, thanks for the info,we know that the cam will have to be replaced. We cleaned it up and polished it so that it will make it through Moab. The bike just had newer model rockers/roller tips installed. Stoveguy is doing his homework on cams that are available, talking to DL and others, deciding whether to go stock or modified replacement. If he gets his hands on a new cam before Moab, Stoveguy and I will install it if he can get the time. Anyone have opinions on cams that are available?

It's so cool to read about Husa brother's helping out other Husa brothers... That's one of the benefits of owning a 'berg, and being part of the UHE, IMO.
