can anyone explain me how to set the valves where can you check the adjustment i know it should be 0.10 mm but where in the heck do you stick the feeler gauge , like on a regular car or bike motor you can just check the distance between the rockers.

go into the doc and you'll see it described there. the doc is on the left of this screen.

i did mine today in 15 minutes.

cheers TAFFY , GOT IT AS EASY AS THAT HEY . IM USED TO WORKING ON HARLEYS AND OLD CJ JEEPS SO THIS IS AL KINDA SMALL , AND A WHOLE NEW WORLD THANKS :) :D

Whats the crack with all this valve adjustment business? dya really have to adjust em so often? I was speaking to Andy Mitchell (supermoto rider who lives near me) and he says he doesnt do his unless he can hear they need doin.... and it can be as little as 2 times a season.... and thats on a race bike?

i haven't done mine for 3-4 months and i must have raced and practiced 20 times this season already. i agree with andy, do 'em when they rattle!

glad you found it ok spain-berg.....

so i set the valves at 0.10 mm.
it took me a lot of time to figure out that tdc means piston at lowest point is that right ??? , i think so , but tell me if im wrong.
i then set them at 0.10 mm and there is still some ratling going on do the husys ratlle , is it a comon thing , imean the ratling is less than before but it doesnt sound as smooth as my harley , or the norton es2 1948 but does kinda sound like my dads sunbeam 250 tt but thats from 1927.

please confirrm that tdc is infact the piston at its lowest point.

i also noticed some sideways play on the rollers is this normal with bergs.

please help.

ps you guys have bean a great help.

wish there was a forum like this when i was rebuilding my 61 sportster.

arthur carl banting now every one knows who i am.

pleased to meet you all.

Hello SPAIN-BERG,

No, you have it wrong, very wrong! I hope you did not run the engine very long with the valves set this way.

TDC means the pistion is at 'Top Dead Center', which is the highest point it can be in the cylinder.

In addition you must have the crankshaft on the compression stroke, which means that all of the valves are closed and the piston has just come to the top compressing the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder.

Best regards,

Joe

  One can only hope that a Husaberg can sound as smooth as a 1927 Sunbeam 250 tt!

take the ignition cover off, pull the plug, take the tappet inspection covers off. put a 17mm socket on the flywheel and turn clockwise. remember that the two marks on the flywheel represent just before TDC and TDC irtself. so it stands to reason that as they sit at 12 o clock you have the piston at TDC. simple!

BUT

we need to know which stroke so that you are on compression with both sets of valves closed.

as you turn the crank watch the inlets open and shut, just after they shut you want those two lines at 12 o clock.

you will now have TDC.

by the 1" either left or right won't hurt here-the valves will be closed. if you know the 4-cycles you can turn the engine a couple of times like this and get a feel for it.

wow i must sound like cook ( im a kite surf instructor and surfer by trade ) and cook meanns kinda like a ***** i dit spend a few hours trying to fit the 0.10 feeler gauge in between the tapets , but i could only get the feeler in with the piston at dead low , man i must sound like a *****.
so to confirm i bring the piston to thr highest point then set the valves.

question ???? when the piston is high no mather how hch i loosen the valve adjusters , i just cant get the feeler gage inbetween them.

CALL ME A MORON WICH I AM , AND NO MATHER HOW MUCH I LOOSEN THE I STILL CANT MANAGE TO FIT THE 0.10 MM GAUGE IN BETWEEN.

MAN FEELS LIKE IM BACK AT SCHOOL.

ARTHURO.

AND TAFFY I GOT NO MARKS ON MY FLY WHEEL , AND I DID HAV A REALAY HARD TIME TODAY I MEAN ITS ALL SO COMPACT DO YOU USE THE JOERACER TOEL OR JUST THE REGULAR FEELERS
OR DO YOU DO IT BY FEEL WICHSEEMS KINDA RISKY

OH YEAH THANKS JOE . NO I DID NOT RUN IT LONG ONLY 7 SEC OR SO BUT HAD A B%%&&(&//% OF A TIME ADJUSTING THEM AT THE HIGHEST POINT , AND IT SEEMED IMPOSIBLE TO EVEN IN ET THE FEELER GAUGE IN THERE EVEN WITH EVERY THING COMPLETELY UNDONE.

CALL ME A COOK WICH I AM , I MEAN ITS ALL SO TIGHT IN THERE.

MAN I WAS BUSTING OUT IN A SWEAT , AND IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE MY AY OFF.

Quit yer whinin KOOK you have a hobby for a job  Watch out or I may take you up on your offer I can wrench your bike, ride it till it breaks and ding your boards all in a good week :D

It only takes one time to do the valves right and then its a snap. You dont even really need the feeler guage. I only used one once. Now to check them I get it on tdc and grab the rocker with my fingers and if it has a LITTLE play up and down GOOD if not adjust using the 1/8 method.

Sounds like you are getting your toy sorted.
Good luck

WOW BOB YOU ARE WELCOME DUDE ANY TIME , PS IM A JACK OF ALL TRADES MASTER OF NONE , SO NO FEELER GAUGES HEY.
MY TRADE IS REALY EVERY THING BEING A DUTCH ANTILLIAN , I ALSO WHOLE SALE JEWELRY CHECK OUT MY WEB WWW.COLARTUDESIGNS.COM IMEAN I COULDNT LIVE OF KITESURFING.

SO NO FEELER GAUGES HEY PLEASE EXPLAIN , ¿¿¿??

......NOT WHINING JUST............... WINING??????????????¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿

arturo

you have it at TDC on the wrong stroke you ***!!!!

you need to go around once more to TDC. do 360 degrees of the crank.

i did say "watch the valves open and close and get used to it" you need the inlet rockers to come up and then put a rod in the plug hole and FEEL GENTLY (i said gently) the piston coming to the top.

what model do you have becasue everyone else has marks on their flywheel....!!!!!

regards

Taffy

To find TDC ( top dead center on the firing stroke) Use a zip tie or plastic straw (so you dont pull a BigBob :p ) in the spark hole. watch for all the valves to be closed at the same time right after the intake valves close.

You must have marks. What year do you have?

READ the DOC again and think about what is is telling you to do and then you will understand why I dont use a feeler guage. it is almost impossible to use a straight feeler. it just dont fit and if you bend one you might crack it and then it breaks off and your problems are just begining.

I have no problem finding TDC using the zip-tie method and watching the rockers, but I'm reasonably certain I have no marks on my flywheel - definitely nothing as obvious as on my XR650 motor.

What I have noticed is that TDC occurs right about when the flatspot trailing-edge on the flywheel is roughly in line with the "pulser coil". From there I fine-tune TDC using the zip tie.

Bike is an '05 FS650E.
