How Many Miles/Hours Can I Resonably Expect?

Hello,

I'm looking onto ubgrading my current 03 fe400 (65hrs) for a 06-07 FE550. My purpose for the bike is to dualsport it. I plan on logging alot of time on road, perhaps 5000Kms per year. Being that the Burg motor only holds roughly a liter of oil and requires very short oil change intervals, will the motor hold up to road miles? I know a aftermarket oil cooler is available, and I would probably try one. Is the reality that I would get lots of miles from the motor, providing I'm changing rocker arms and piston every so often? I know that the FE550 is not made for heavy road riding, but I can't afford a nice dirtbike and a nice streetbike right now. Any one that rides their Burg on the road care to comment? How bought high hour bikes?
Convince me to stay away from a new KTM530 please!!!
Aaron.

Here's a thread regarding Dual Sporting a Husaberg- http://www.husaberg.org/index.php?name= ... highlight=

I ride my '03 on the roads, not as a daily commuter though.

I know guys that run their enduros more road, dirt and pavement, then trail. I know one with an '05 FE450 that has to have close to 3000 miles / 5000 kms on their 450 with no issues, well if you think a worn down rear tire is an issue!

280 engine hours and 8000 miles on my bike. I ride it almost every day in the city with occasional track days and canyon rides.

Aside from an exhaust valve spring that went kabling at 6000 miles all has been well.

These bikes might not enjoy running semi-flat out on the highway for extended periods due to their 1qt of oil but for most real world uses the motors hold up just fine. Oil changes every 6-8 engine hours or every 300 miles is a reasonable interval. It takes all of 15 minutes.

You might want to wear some gel/padded bicycle shorts or look into a more cushy seat upgrade for long rides.

I like the idea of the cush drive, but honestly I'm mostly concerned about engine life. I am under the impression the cush hub is to save your tranny from sudden jarring impacts. I want my engine to last for a lot of cruising miles.

Mine's a 2002 FS650e with just over 7K miles on it and the engine is still sweet. I do try and keep the revs down as much as possible though as the engine has soo much torque. It has a cush drive though.

(sorry for my english !!)

my 501 fe.e 2004 had more than 32000 km and 863 hours without any operation on the engine.

Those are some pretty incredible numbers. So no work what so ever to the motor??? Please fill us in on this incredible story.

(another time : sorry for my english, I'm french)

Quick présentation : I lived in France in a town (Besançon) near the Switzverland frontary.
I ride Husaberg since 1990 (6 ==> 501 and 1 ==> 400).
Every year, I ride many kilometers (20 to 25000 km) for 2 reasons :
first for my job, I work in a forestry company. It's really easy for my to use my HSB for going in wood;
Second, I organize off road moto trip in France, So that, it'sn also very easy for me to make many kilometers with my bike.
Perhaps, it's incredible but my HSB (501 fe.e) 2004 has got 32093 km and 863 hours (and no 836) without any operation on the engine.
I ve never touch the engine, no new piston, no change of timing chanin, no new cylinder rollbear ... only one adjustment of valves (at 1500 km). Good oil (motul 300V 5-40), drain every 500 km, air filter every day...
All my Hsb have many km (more than 20000) but since 2004, the fiability is better.
Every day, I listen engine and if I don't hear a bad noise, it'will be a good day !!!

Hey faktor,

Can you please translate that first line for a yank?

The now (in?)famous Musical Youth lyrics were changed from 'Pass the Kutchie(joint)' to 'Pass the Dutchie' to make them acceptable to prudish American radio stations.

Is it clear now :)

While Laurent-t does indeed seem to have the worlds highest hours logged,I do have a totally unscientific theory.(Now that Lineawaever does not post anymore we can say almost anything without reprisal).
As long as these engines are run within the design linitations concerning load and RPM they will last an impressive number of hours.Also as soon as these limitations are exceeded the engines life is not just shortened a bit but is over right now.
To be clear i will say that at 6000 rpm the engine will run hundreds of hours,if say 9000 rpm is used for more than 60 seconds you need crank bearings now.
my old TZ250 roadracer was the same,exceed the max red line rpm only a few hundred rpm for 15-30 seconds and it needed new needle bearings.
It just may be that our french hour leader has always operated his engine within its design limits.If you look and listen at/to his tape he sounds like he knows how to ride his Berg.
