I need to pull my stator to get it rewound. however, i don't know how to get the flywheel off. looks like i need a puller.. any help?

You will need a puller. MP#12. You can get them from dssalesusa.net. Contact a dealer, maybe they have them as well...

ignore the second one, that's 28mm thread and you want 26mm.

Good point. I would have had to measure it up first. Taff pulls flywheels in his sleep! :D

Just as a question, what is the thread size, pitch & handing if anyone else comes across tis later on?

well i think that the advert describes the thread wrong but he must have looked into it. i would describe it as a LEFT-HAND thread, 26 x 1.5mm pitch.

My puller just came in today, And im really excited to get my stator out of this damn bike, but there is a nut holding the flywheel on, that i need to get off the use the puller so i can pull the flywheel, and THEN check the stator. how do i get that nut off? when i torque down on it, the flywheel spins, and i cant hold the flywheel with enough force to break the nut loose. Any help is appreciated.

air gunh

and remember, the thread goes the OTHER way. so drive the airgun clockwise to get it off.

are there any alternatives to an airgun? I don't really have one at my disposal. and thanks for the clockwise hint, i would have never known.

you'll have to forgive me as im not in the least a mechanic, I put it in gear, had my buddy step on the rear brake, and.. the flywheel still spins .. what am i doing wrong? thanks alot

try and lock the gears on the left of the engine. the top gear of the two has a nice little area between the gear and a concave kink in the cover face. i stick a 15mm stumpy bolt in the gear teeth to the wall. works a treat!

try it again and use a hammer (preferably softish) to whack the wrench end suddenly to break it free. works a treat

I've been trying the hammer trick. seems its just really tight on there. I even try to hold the flywheel back with a rubber strap wrench, still no luck. how frusterating.

If you try this, put it in TOP gear, not 1st. It makes it much easier on the drivetrain and you can put more torque onto the nut before the rear brake slips.

I made a spanner to fit into the two holes in the flywheel to lock it in place against the foot peg. Short of the air rattle gun Taff mentioned this is probably the next best way to get the nut off.

The spanner is almost a necessity to put it back together again as you can use it to hold the flywheel while you tighten the nut with a torque wrench. If you don't torque the nut sufficiently the flywheel will come loose. If you are lucky the flywheel key will shear off instantly, put the spark timing out and stop the engine.

If you are unlucky the flywheel will flog back & forth on the crankshaft and bugger the keyway in it, then shear the key off so you will still end up stuck. You will then probably have to pull out the crankshaft to fix it.

I made up a tool that looks like the factory tool in the manual, just need 2 bolts and a bit of flat and a tack of weld, although nuts would be OK I guess.

Another option is a strap wrench. One for oil filters from an auto parts place, of you can also get big ones from a plumbing shop, or just make one with a bit of nylon strap and an old socket extension.

ITS OFF !!! wooo!

seriously though, i finally got the flywheel off, and am now looking at the stator. Its all pretty dirty in there, but i can't seem to find where to test the black/red and black/green connectors. plus, how do I pull the stator off if the the wire/ wire harness all pass through the hole underneath the stator? am i missing something?
thanks for all the help everyone. I really appreciate it.

The connectors are up under the tank right next to the CDI/coil unit, where the stator wires connect to it. You unplug them up there. The stator normally has about 2 feet of wire permanently attached to it.

The hole under the stator you mention should be through a black rubber grommet that slips out of a slot in the engine case when the stator cover is off. The grommet comes out with the stator.

Also, you don't have to pull the stator off the bike (or even pull the flyweel or its cover off for that matter) to measure the resistance of the stator - just the fuel tank.

i've seen youtube video's (not of husabergs) that has the slot in the engine case for the grommett to slip out, so i know what you're talking about, but there isn't any such slot that i can see. the engine case is solid all around it. it is a 1996 FC/E ? 501.
