Ok.I rebuilt my WER. damper.Used 10wt hydralic oil.
Filled it with a seringe.Worked fine on the bench.
Went riding today,at first it turned a little harder to the
left than it did the right, then wham,it wouldn't turn
left at all.I had my daughter with me teaching her how
to ride on her Yamaha. Now I have shown her how to fall too.
Did I put too much oil in?Is there a specified amount?
The download off their site shows zip.
I had to push the Berg out of the woods but it wasn't
her fault.Started on the button cold and ran perfect,
(if you like going in clockwise circles.)
Anyone with successfull refill advice?

Last time I bled ALL of the air out as some
on the KTM site recomended. This time I
left some air in.The unit centers better and
seems to work now.Is the air bubble necessary?
How do you judge how much oil/air to run?

Tim, did you read the instructions? Seems like they strongly recommend a certain weight oil, and 10wt aint ringing a bell.

You need to get all the air out. Whip it up and force it out like the instructions say. However, an air bubble will reduce damping force and should not cause it to bind. I think one of the relief balls was stuck shut.

I couldn't get any instructions off their site.
Do you have a copy?(when all else fails,
read the instructions)

I found this on a competitors damper site;

Traxxion Dynamics recommends Sprint Steering Dampers exclusively. This high quality damper was designed by, and is manufactured by, a former F1 engineer in England. They are 14-click adjustable, and are rebuildable with readily available parts (try that with Ohlins…). These dampers have a unique, simple, and reliable internal mechanism to allow for expansion of the heated oil. (Scotts and WER do not have this, which is why they are assembled with an air bubble. This bubble allows the damper to skip as it changes direction…).

So maybe as my 100% full damper heated the oil up,
it locked up?If I pressure bleed all the air out,the unit
does not center.I have equipment at work to remove air
from hydralic systems, big syringes and a vacuum chamber.
Perhaps their instructions for removing air actually leaves
some in?

I found the instructions from the rebuild kit. They call for 5 wt fork oil. You need to set the damper in a vise by the mounting plate. Do not clamp the damper body. Tilt it so that the front is pointed down slightly.

Fill squeeze bottle with 5wt fork oil. Fill by forcing fluid in the adjuster screw hole and out the elevated bleed hole. Replace adjuster screw first screwing all the way in, then insert bleed screw.

Stick a screwdriver through the shaft and work it vigorously back and forth. Quickly remove the adjuster and bleed screw and force out foamy oil. Rotate the shaft slowly while forcing oil in the adjusted hole. Be careful not to introcuce air in either hole. Replace adjuster and bleed screw as above. Repeat procedure until all foam is removed and unit operates smoothly.
