Any good/general rules of thumb on what the coloring of the head pipes might be as an indicator of lean/good/rich jetting?

Lean jetting results in hotter exhaust temps, rich jetting resulting in cooler exhaust temps, etc.

The stock head pipes on my 2005 FS650 have turned a nice combination of light purple/silver and it's running on the rich end of the spectrum.

The head pipes on some Berg's I've seen with lean jetting (hotter exhaust temps) have turned to a light brown.

i'm not into pretty colours. i've never been in touch with my feminine side.

1300d is the temp when lean and 800d when correct jetting. rich i think is about 500d. fact is though that at some point your fuel delivery may go through a bloody rotten patch that is very, very lean.

it could be at 3mm of slide lift, 4mm or WOT, but somewhere it'll be lean.

"your mission, should you accept it is to jet your bike correctly through countless hours of trial and error" then buy some new headers... :D :D

supertireguy,

The color of your head pipe is just the natural process of oxidation and outgassing of the metal. Being that your bike is so new it will go from chrome -> to purples -> to brown over time. I am only saying this as all bikes with the shiny new chrome look will deteriorate to a dull brownish color as the bike heats and cools over time...
