Is the sprag clutch known for failure on these bikes? If so are they available? If one can be found, are they hard to replace? Thanks for any info.

a)yes, b)taffy would know (Taffy to the red phone, please), c)yes.
bike located west of wickenburg?

I thought the old style motors didn't have the same sprag issues...is it easy to kick start? I'd guess more likely a de-comp spring issue

Well sure, but I was under the impression they weren't nearly as much of a problem as on the 01-03 bikes. Again if the cam decomp is working properly these motors spin over easier than most

This bike was at one time located west of Wickenburg. Now it’s at Second Mesa..

Husaberg estart issues

When it’s being contrary the starter spins and won’t engage. I have a 100 cranking amp battery in it now. I’m thinking maybe a bigger battery. Any suggestions? To ned37; are you still in cottonwood Az? I have two sisters that live there.

Verify the starter gear is still in place, people like to remove them for some crazy reason. Again does it kick start easily? You should just be able to boot it over with no real sequence unlike a big honda. If it is intermittent most likely a one-way clutch issue

sounds like the sprague:( it's gotta be weak by now.
but, i would suggest you adjust the valves (1\6 turn method) and make sure you have the proper clearance on the exhausts.
even if i did know your sisters, my wife wouldn't let me talk to them.;)

The starter gear is there. I seriously don’t think this bike could be kick started, at least not with my leg. I’m trying to understand the decomp system. I haven’t looked those components yet. If all that functioned properly, would life be easier for the estart? Another question I have is would a mikuni flatslide 400mm carb work in place of the original Dellorto? It needs a rebuild and I’m not a fan of old dellortos. When this bike runs it is really nice. I know it’s ancient but I like it. If I could resolve the starter issue I think I could ride it as long as I need it. Thanks for all the input.

Definitely pull the valve cover and cam, when you get it apart you can see how simple the decomp system is. Basically it is a centrifugal eccentric which lifts the exhaust valves slightly until the engine reaches idle RPM at which point it flings out and goes smooth on the cam lobe (think a mechanical distributor advance). If the spring is broken or face worn down it will be a bear to start and end up breaking more stuff. The motor hitting a wall of compression on the button will quickly murder the one-way

My 99s spring just needed to be re-wound and its been working great, I can kick it over like a 125 in gym shoes without any issue....honestly one of the easiest kicking bikes I have ever had. The Dellortos are good carbs and very very simple, I'd get a $20 seal kit and clean it all up before moving on from it. These are awesome bikes, and I think you got one of the best!

i don't remember what the early decomp looked like, but if it's the same as the '01-03, it might need replaced

Fx600 starting issues

I continue to have these estarting issues. I think I have to bite the bullet and fix it or abandon the bike completely which I’m not inclined to do. I think it needs a new sprag clutch and some attention to the auto decomp system. I would really appreciate any help i can get with these problems such as parts or cross reference info. There has to be a sprag clutch out there somewhere that will work in this bike. Thanks again for all the feed back I’ve gotten so far.

Get that decomp spring checked and rewound, I am very sure that is the root of your issues. The one-way is probably ok...if anything it will just need a new $1 garter spring.

Bring it down to scottsdale and I'll get it all fixed for you!

yes the dell orto carb is a major part of the problem. but a Mikuni that nobody has jetted for you is a bit like asking a Superfortress pilot to fly blind and pull the lever whenever he fancies it and still expecting him to hit the target.

I do an easystart kit that really improves the starting. this will I hope be superceded very soon by a 'Berg Booster' jetting needle and kit that should not only start well but improve performance as well.

I disagree, I have had great results with at least 6 Dells on different bikes and cars. Once they are dialed they are damn fine

its a smaller choke jet new atomiser and needle, new fuel valve and o rings, a PJ and instructions on what to do to the carb's slide. we'd also like to see you put the choke cable from the carb up to the bars and make it a variable choke (as open you wish it to be).
