Fitting decomp spring

So I've had trouble starting my 02 fs650 berg since I got it a few months ago. The kick start has basically snapped so electric start only at the minute. How ever it's got the r6 starter on it,it manages to turn the engine over once nd then just spins. Rang dave Clarke and they basically said the auto decomp spring has either come off or isn't working good enuf.so basically where is it and how hard is it to change the spring.i am a mechanic but never had anything with a decompressor before, any help or pics would be great

The more I read the more confused I get. I thought it would have a decompression spring on the gear on the end of the cam. But as I've looked about it seems it's not,it's the lever on the right hand side of the engine and it works off a cam that's connected to the wire on the side, help confused

the auto decomp IS on the sprocket end of the cam. the one with the wire is your manual decomp that you use.

you won't get a 2002 to start on the leccy boot without major expense and labour. the decomp is just the first of many jobs.

Hey Adam,
You're going in the right direction with the R6 starter and auto decomp. Can't find the links on my phone but when I fire up the PC tomorrow I'll dig them out.
With your new starter motor you'll need,
An uprated decomp, new version,
Timing spot on,
Valve clearances spot on,
Starter clutch/Sprague in good condition,
And a decent battery,
That should see your bike starting a lot more reliably assuming everything else is OK.
My 650 would just about start cold on the leccy boot but I only used it as a re_starter.

If its that much trouble nd if I can actually kick it up I might just take it off nd blank it off some how,the bike has had a load of money spent on it at some point,I wunt mind giving it to some 1 to give it all the once over like the decomp and valves etc but I'm scared of the bill il get back lol

The R6 starter is the dearest bit, apart from your time.
Have a look at the links, its mostly set up time and a couple of new bits.

Stick with that thirteen year old performance beast.

I haven't actually spent anything yet,it's already got the r6 starter on it,ye I'm not guna sell it no way,it's just so much fun to ride and fast.all the help is much appreciated

Think I've given up with the idea of keeping the bike, after trying on about 5 occasions for half an hour at a time I've managed to have it running twice for a few seconds then it's cut out, when I bought the bike the lad fired it straight up in one kick.pretty sure it's just me that's the problem just can't kick it up :-( so not sure what to do

Change my mind a lot, it's changed back now lol,but what really is correct procedure for starting? I can get a good kick sometimes, but I'm not sure I'm kicking from tdc nd I no ul never get any 4 stroke started with out doing that,I can defiantly find the compression stroke tho lol

spend real money on it ya tight northern spendthrift!

until you line all ya ducks up you aren't going to find it easy to start it and it won't be any fun!

It's not that I'm tight, well might b a bit lol how much would something like that cost or is it just a case of u won't no till u look

can never be 100% sure till you see it. there are so many give away signs if like me you're using your ears and eyes to pivk up the info?

I've made the offer for you to call me and chat about it before.

up to you now....

Taffy

Sorry to bust in here with a question but--what years of R6 starter work for this installation?

Thanks.
