An unbaised review of the 07 Husaberg FE550: :D

Wow!!!!!! Hands down the best overall bike I've ever ridden. A couple weeks ago I recieved my in crate 550, courtesy of Scott at RossRocher Sales in Ontario. I t was a fantastic feeling unwrapping my first brand new bike. I've owned plenty of second hand, so this was quite a thrill for me. I tore the bike apart before putting it all together, greasing the swingarm pin, headrace bearings, shock bushings, front and rear axles. Also went through the assorted bolts and fastners, adding loctite and torquing to spec.

Fired up with no hesitation of the e-start cold and gently broke her in for about 30mins. Dumped the oil, and went trail riding the next day. At the 3 hour mark I dumped the oil and filter again, and checked the valves. Intake was at spec, both exhaust a touch on the tight side. Spent the rest of the weekend working her up to 7 hours total ride time.

A few things that stuck out to me: First- the suspension. As it is braking in, just gets better and better. Absolutley plush on the trail chop, but haven't been able to bottom it out at all. This bike handles so well, alot of that has to do with the wonderful suspension. My last bike (03 FE400) was also the most advanced I had ever owned. The suspenders on the 07 are night and day. I couldn't believe how much better. 8O

Second- The motor is a sweetheart. So smooth, makes power when you want it, and lots of torque in the meat of the powerband. Very little vibration, and wheelies on demand. I couldn't wipe the grin off my face.

Third- This thing turns on a friggin dime! The steering is so precise, very, very sharp. The geometry of my 03 400 is similar, but the 550 steers lighter, and quicker. Could be the setup, however stock the 07 is unreal. A buddy on the ride has a KTM 520, and we swapped bikes for a while. The 520 feels like a tank in comparision. Turns slow and deliberate, as opposed to quick and precise. Different geometry and KTM has a longer stroke motor which gives more gyroscopic resistance to turning.

Fourth- e-start works everytime, cold or hot. Stock jetting seems pretty good. Everything I didn't like about my 400 is fixed on the 550. Good estart, better carb, more power.

Overall this is a fantastic machine. Refined and proven motor with an excellent handling chassis. Blew away my expectations, worth every penny I spent. In the works is dual-sporting it, and I expect it to excel as a trail-road-trail bike as well. A buddy who rides with me is so taken with it, he's seriously looking at getting one! This bike sells itself.

Thanks Husaberg for a fantasic product, and thanks Scott for getting the bike to me. 8)
Aaron.

so that was a vancouver shakedown! (do you know your rock 'n roll?)

it's genuinly great to hear such praise waxed on the bikes and proves that we still make a product that's up there!

i'll have to get out my white bicycle.

Yep, just did my first ride on my new 07 FE550 on the weekend. Got rid of the trusty old DRZ400 for this new ride. I must say I could not be happier. Have a friend who bought himself an 06 model KTM 525, so this was partly the reason for me getting rid of the drz and getting the berg. Was a long and hard decision. Had many opportunities to ride his KTM which I must say impressed greatly, but in the end a run out 07 model berg at 11400 was just too good to miss.

Things I have noticed that are stand out features are:
How much faster everything happens. A few times I was really opening up the throttle and and found myself frantically grabbing for the brake lever in a desperate attempt to make the corners. Really had to keep tabs on the throttle till I got used too it (if ever).

Brakes are dynamite. When you gather your bearings after screwing on the throttle the brakes are absolutely exceptional, real stand out feature I thought.

10.5 litre tank is perfect for the trails. Mr KTM does struggle in this department with a mere 8 litre tank. You don't have to worry about being the first to run out of fuel.

Bearing in mind I rode a DRZ before hand, this thing is very lite in feel and can be easily thrown around on the tighter stuff. Had heard people comment on how wide the tank makes it feel, but I really didn't notice it.

One area I am not entirely comfortable with at the moment is the suspension. Have found that it has a very noticeable head shake at speed when hitting uneven terrain (corrugation and small holes in the road). Over erosion mounds however it sucks up the big jumps with no bottoming out. I weigh 95kg or 115kg fully geared up. Have spoken with the dealer and they said to give it time settle in before taking any drastic actions.
I understand that this will just be an adjustment problem, one for the suspension specialists to look at when every thing settles in.

Sixth gear is awesome for the transit sections, can sit on 100 to 120km/hr with ease and not to the detriment of the lower gearing. A big compromise I have had to make with my drz, speed or low down torque. Great to get the best of both worlds.

The power delivery is something that I will never get sick of. The power is very forgiving but when getting into the mid range it becomes very responsive and aggressive depending how far you screw the throttle on. You can grab a gear that is too tall for the situation you are in and it will just tractor pull you out. Hold it pinned open and it will keep building power, fast. Engine mods and the search for more power are not something that I will be looking for any time soon. At present it has enough power to rip Jesus off the cross.

All I can say is that it's not a bike that every one is riding on the trails, and I like that.
It is easy to ride, easy to clean and easy to change the oil on. Air cleaner is able to be accessed without tools and I can pull monster wheelies on it. I go to work on Monday and think about riding it all week. The one week I have owned it anyway. I can really see the attraction people have with Bergs now. The dealer did say to me, "once you throw your leg over a Berg you will never look at any other bike the same again". He was right.

ihaterocks,

I had that very same problem with my '05 FE550e, and I can attest with full confidence - do your sag settings by the book, then go test, and if you wand to get creative alter the preload + / - 1.0mm and see what you like, then go to clickers. You'll have the headshake and some of the vagueness dialed out in 30minutes flat.

Ahoolsema - Great news to see you are so stoked on the new beast, looks like you ride to some scenic areas too.

Azza.

Thanks Azza. I haven't touched the sag settings yet. Will make that a priority before another ride tomorrow. Will get back a let you know how things panned out.
