Fe450e won't run idle

My lovely husaberg Fe450e 2005 won't run at idle speed, starting it is really difficult, i just cleaned out the carb and everything looked fine while it was appart. The bike was behaving the same before i cleaned it.

Could anybody give me some advice.
I'm new here btw :D

It started fine until one day after riding just in town, it wouldn't run at idle, i have to constantly keep the throttle a little bit on, even when the bike is running.

Regards Sindri Jens

Hello Sjensinn... Welcome to the club

Idles are not my area to talk about but have you tried adjusting your carburetor and throttle cable?

Also might be a weird thing but could you have left your choke on?

How does the bike behave while riding it at higher rpms? Any backfires? bogging etc?

Did you clean the pilot jet with something to poke through it like a torch cleaner?

I did try to adjust it, and i just recently cleaned it.
I didn't leave the choke on no :p, but it wont idle anyways so it wouldn't matter, since it wont start unless i pull the throttle, and will die if i release it.

The bike backfires a lot, but other than that and the fact that i have to keep the choke on at all times it's fine!

No i didn't, i have very few special tools, i just got into the enduro buisness, this is my second bike, first one being the Yz250 agressive little beast.

I think im going to rip it out again and clean it very thoroughly this time!
Removing the carb is a pain in my ***, have to take just about everything off the bike to get to it!

Fuel screw is the screw i can manually control to set the idle right?

If so no, i don't think anything was missing when i pulled it apart.

Sæll og velkominn :)

there are two: the idle adjuster screw and the fuel screw - the fuel screw is on the engine side of the carb and tucked under where the air-fuel mix leaves the carb

hard to explain but easy to see :) google "fcr fuel screw" or check the manual

The pilot jet plugs solid very easily if it sits for more than few months and you left fuel in the carb. You can usually find a cleaning tool like the one pictured above very inexpensively if you look around. Tourist, your fellow countryman, would probably know where to get one. If you just can't locate one check a welding supply store.

You could also just replace the jet with a new one but the same thing will always happen if you put her away wet.

Two things you will always want to do after a ride is drain the float bowl or just turn the gas off and ride it around until it runs out of gas and plug it into a quality battery maintainer / charger like the Optimate 3 or higher (4,5 etc.).

Íslendingur? :D

Anyways i just pulled it apart again, both the fuel mixture screw with the spring and o ring, and the idle screw, with the spring, were in theyr place. Cleaned it thoroughly with carb cleaner and then compressed air, i think i managed to clean the pilot jet and it's passage.

Few photos of the good looking keihin

Jebbs :) We're 3 at least semi active now on the forum, plus the legendary HeimirBardason who drops in from time to time. And there are quite a few 'Bergs on the island. I'm waiting to win the Happaþrenna to buy a 550 Bergur.

Nice to know I'm not alone! Just bought my first berg a month ago, and am loving it already.

The one biggest concern of mine or problem, is that the speedometer is not working, the guy who sold it to me said he had kept it in storage for the most part of 3 years, and so this winter the battery died, and now the hour and odometer and speedometer.

I changed the battery, and then changed the battery in the speedometer itself, and it still wont work. Any one know any solutions? He said it was working fine last year.

After cleaning the bike still won't run unless im holding the trottle:mad:

It is very hard to start, i don't know what to do.

I think the diaphragm is worn out a bit, and the throttle free play is very little. Could this be the problem?

a 450 is the worst berg to work on carb issues. not enough room since it's a short stroke motor. i keep a 2" (50mm) piece of about a 16 gage stranded wire in the toolbox. and when i want to clean a pilot jet, i remove the jet and pull one strand out of the wire piece and run it thru, rinse, repeat. works very well to clean it. when it's dry, you should easily see thru it.

the accel pump shouldn't affect idle, and it's usually ok unless it's not seated or is torn.
the lack of free play is also not an issue with idle. its a personal preference and can be adjusted by turning the fittings at the carb end of the cables under the black over.

.

Okay so ill rip the bloody carb out again, atleast im getting good practice out of this, ive basically stripped out the bike. Maybe the passage for the pilot jet is still jammed

FWIW, This is a Keihin FCR carb correct?

I think it is time to start at the basics instead of removing and cleaning and replacing and removing and cleaning and replacing. Carbs are pretty simple things, fuel metering and air nothing more, You also have a Throttle Position Sensor.

Take your carb and set everything to factory settings, such as the mixture screw this should be turned in all the way and then backed out 1 1/2 turns if I remember correctly. You will need to set your TPS or the bike will not idle correctly and sometimes not at all. I am guessing that you loosened or removed the TPS when cleaning. It need to be set and is important for idle. If you look in the manual, you will find the correct way to set this prior installation as long as you have a multi-meter. Now replace the carb and start the bike, hold throttle and keep bike running while turning idle screw in until it maintains its own idle. Then follow instructions in manual to set the idle mixture screw to stabilize to a clean idle.

Hope this helps as I am sure the carb is very clean by now :)

You can also adjust the tps by feel if you don't have a multimeter, with bike running adjust by hand until it maintains a idle. Not perfect but will work until you find a meter.

It's a keihin carb, yes, i did not remove the TPSensor, didn't really see the point and i dont have the tool for it, it's also marked from the previous owner i believe. I thought i set it to factory settings kinda, but ill have to give it a better look.

New to bikes but im learning
