i have checked back and can't find the same fault, this is the second 450 i have had with the same fault. the bike starts to spin over but the the starter start slip and the engine stops turning. the firt bike i changed everything, starter, starter clutch over torque gear solanide etc but still the same. stars great of the kick and sometimes when its warm. i am going to adjust the taps tomorrow and change the oil as the oil commen thing is i have used thumper oil. any help wound be great

2 of us have the same problem since new. An 06 FE 550 and 07 FE 650, will e-start when warm ( leaving the bike in the sun{cases}helps ) but a cold motor start and the starter freewheels. My 550 kicks over well cold, usually 2nd kick so I have made this part of my routine, but what are the consequences of this "freewheeling" ?

Tecknically, the e start is a restarter and the bikes are supposed to and were designed to be kickstarted when cold.

The freewheeling is the one way clutch that disconnects the starter from the rest of the spinning engine once it starts to run. I don't think that there will be any damage from it free wheeling on the occational cold start.

Good to know. Amazing how we adapt so quickly to convenience. Thanks for the info

My 450 has the same "feature." I never really worried about it, because its obviously just a cold weather thing, plus I've had motors in other machines do the same.

It doesn't generally get too cold in South Texas, so I'll give it a second chance on e-start. However, kicking it to life is pretty easy affair.
