FE400E Just stopped!

Hi there in the world,

it´s always the same bloody story.
Failed stators everywhere.
Last week on the Husaberg Festival in Germany we
had much fun in riding enduro and MX until
the stator of a friend of mine and my own stator failed,
nearly at the same time.
Ok, in the last few weeks I was a little careless in cleaning
and removing moisture in the cover, but my friends stator
was looking as new (model 2003). And he puts the ignititon
cover off after each ride!
I talked there with the responsibles for guarantee (from Austria), they also know the problem,
and it´s a shame, really embarassing. They do what they can,
my friend may get a new one, because that is covered by the guarantee.
The consequence for me, right now, is clear: I´m looking for
a Kokusan ignition from a KTM. This stator even works if
you broke one induction coil! No joke. It´s possible to fit it into
the Husaberg. Is anybody else thinking about that?
After installing I will let you know what happened.

greetings

I am not so sure that cleaning the stator after each ride is the solution. You really need to stop the water entering in the first place.

If you are getting water inside the casing you obviously need to dry it out but it also means that the stator is most likely wet internally and that corrosion will follow.

I have done the following.

1) Sealed the top of the wiring loom with silicon.
2) Replaced the oring with a gasket.
3) Drilled a hole at the bottom of the cover and ran a clear breather tube from the hole up under the tank.

I still check it about once a month but don't find any water.

If moisture does get in during a ride it needs to escape, I believe the hole with or without a tube fitted is important.

After sealing the wiring loom I had found water was still getting in past the oring, the gasket was the last change I made and it really helps.

First couple of rides, I had water in the stator.

Made sure the rubber grommet was fitting well into the stator cover, my dealer filled the top of the loom that enters the stator with silicon and zip tied it off.

No holes drilled, plenty of pressure washing and have not had any more problems to date. Checked regularly for a while but don't bother any more.

Has anyone ever tried running these stators open to the engine/gearcase oil like some of the old Jap bikes? It would sure stop moisture.

Brad, are you crazy? Another place to leak oil from!

Actually that is what Husaberg is now doing with the Kokasan ignition.

Yeah probably..... but a bit of oil out would be cheaper than a bit of water in!

I guess when it stopped dripping you'd know it needed oil! :D
