FE400E Just stopped!

Yesterday my 2003 FE400E just stopped running in the local forest and it was a lond push back to the car. Bugger! No spark whatso ever. Just stopped. Dealer says most likely the stator, bring it in for a checkup.
With only 38 hours and 1400km on the clock, is this normal? Is this predictable. If it is the stator is it likely to happen again?

The only thing I have done different last week is charge the battery while still in the bike as per the maintenance video. Has this proceedure damaged the stator?

Thanks Guys,

I doubt you damaged anything with the charging, unless you tried to start it with the charger still connected. Have you checked the plug for fouling? Try to get a spark with another plug first.
I have had to replace my coil with this prob, but not the stator. See how you go.

Same thing here the problem lied in the coil not the stator

If you check in the hard start guide it will give detailed steps to determine which component has indeed failed!

Maybe better to have a good look at the (poor quality) wiring first. On my fe501e 03 I found a lot of places were it was possible to get some problems.... Up to now 50 hrs non stop fun.
Good luck.

Gentlemen.

it is the stator and it will be replaced tomorrow.

thanks for the advice.

Hi,

in 9 of 10 cases of no fire on the spark plug
the reason is a failed stator. This ****** thing
is really going on my nerves. You have to check
if there is moistness in your ignition cover.
It kills your ignition.
I think it´s the most sold spare part at my husaberg dealer.

i'm just so glad i drilled a hole underneath and let it breath. no problems in 28 months.

one of the only things not to piss me about though. my local dealer has had the new ignitions go on 3 bikes and all have overheated as part of the diagnosis.

at least the bikes telling ya summit.

So Taffy,

the go is to drill a small hole at the bottom and let what gets in get out?

let some air in and circualte?

let water out?

I have a FC470 and i had starting problems when riding in damp conditions until it just stopped, stator plate had being getting damp and just rusted up the contacts. Dealer said takecover off and clean after every ride because the seal isnt that good, what a pain i thought, so i put a smear of silicon all the way round the cover, that was 6 mths ago and i havent had a single starting issue since !!!!!

yep! it does both i guess! i haven't had that cover off since i checked my valve timing a year ago and before that?

if you pull the cover off you can see that the place to drill is below the cases. so i used the foot of a vernier and measured on the 'inside' how far in from the joining face i wanted the hole drilled, then i centre punched and drilled from underneath.

as said on the olf forum-the carb doesn't like water instead now but at least it can be sorted for free.

no i don't have a picture but it really isn't a big deal. alarming that you are drilling your case but you'll get over it. i did a 5mm hole and threaded it. some people put an opened split pin in so that no dirt accumulates there.

measure from the face in to a comfortable point where you think the water would sit whilst on the sidestand. then go under the engine, again measure from the cover face, scribe the mark, centre punch and drill.

My '99FS600 has the same dampness problem. Thought about drilling a hole, but didn't know if it would solve the problem. After all, I clean/dry it before every ride, but only a few miles later it quits charging. It goes from 100% charging to 0% over the morning commute (as judged by the headlight strength). Did the hole stop this, Taffy, or wasn't your condition this bad?

I'm have a real job trying to piece the story together as to what happened when. There seems to be a few threads going at once on the same subject.

You have got your bike going with a rewound stator haven't you? Did the rewind look to be a quality job? Does it look to be well sealed against water ingress so that you haven't got to worry about moisture in the maggy evey time you stop for a leak?

If it looks OK I may need Bert's services on a non-berg machine.

PS. Trying to start the bike with the charger connected shouldn't hurt the bike but it may make the charger growl a bit! (depending on its type)

If I drill a hole won't it also let more water in or do you plug the hole when you ride?

I am worried that water will get in, especially if the bike stalls in water then the cooling effect will actually suck water in :? or am I missing something?

yes you're missing something :D :D

the water can only go in if air leaves and where is the air going to leave and how quick?

ride with it open and don't talk about it until you've done the carb overflow as well. otherwise you'll even be stopping in a bloody puddle!

it's that simple.

FE400 just stopped

Yesterday My FE400 did exactly thr same thing and I've only done 600k's.
I can't work it out, absolutly no spark. I'd be keen to find out the solution. :(
