FE 570 vs 450?? (in terms of handling)

Hi guys:

I am about to buy my third Husaberg (in the past 3 years). The first one (FE450 ´09) loved it and sold it with nearly 200 hours at a reasonable price. I did this because I could an almost new one (FE450 `09 with 3 hours) at a great price. So I had to put no significant money to change from a 200 hour bike to a 3 hour bike (both same year and model).

Now, the KTM and Husaberg dealer here in Ecuador and me, are partnering in a Extreme Enduro Race name UKUPACHA (hell in the native language) which I own the rights and KTM/HUSABERG are going to the be the main sponsors of this race which in going to it´s thirg succesful year.

The dealer is going to pay de sponsorship in a really big discount in 2 bikes. So the thing is that I can renovate my Husaberg again, and I can choose between a FE450 ´10 or a FE570 ´10.

The question is, which bike should I pick in terms of handling and versatility.

We ride here 2.800 meters above sea level which is very high so almost every one buys 450cc at least because of the altitude, bike´s looses at least 15% power.

I race ocassionally in cross countrys and hare scrambles and some enduro races, and the 450 was good enough in power and handling, and I want to know if I am going to sacrifice all of these If I get a 570 or I will even get better and faster???

I heard somewhere that the 570 was easier to ride??? Is that true?? I also heard that the 450 reved faster so it has a more explosive feel (better for racing)??'

Let me have your advise.

Thanks

SC

I can't speak about the 450 v. 570, but I would say that mine, after I had the suspension re-sprung and re-valved (I am 80 pounds over the stock weight range), handles very well. It is amazing how much difference the correct setup makes.

I would have to ask what kind of terrain are we talking about? Tight technical? Kind of open? Very open?

I would think the power of the 570 would have the advantage in the open terrain.

I ride almost solely tight technical woods trails and I still like the bike. Very nice even linear power delivery. I wouldn't think the 450 would have a completely different nature to its power delivery; just less of it.

The map switch makes a significant different, you probably already know that having had a bike already - but one thing you might consider is that you maybe aren't limited to just 'soft' v. 'std' v. 'agressive'; maybe you can have someone with the right tools create both a different ignition and EFI map for the different settings. I know you can tune the EFI, but maybe you can also find a way to load a different ignition map?

Why don't you go ride a 570 and see what it is about?

i have a 07 550 and i weigh 80kg dripping wet, im 5'10" tall and i would never go anything under 550 again, and we ride all terrain, yes they are a handfull in the tight stuff but its so much more fun i find and it keeps ya fit and makes you feel alive when you can wrap it on any gear and it stands up on the back wheel,

my dads 07 ktm 450 as great but does not have the same presence when you on top of the machine.

FE450 -v- FE570: Same weight (within a few ounces); same geometry; same suspension.

Why would they handle differently?

oye! who asked the question!!!!

BTW, I compared the FE570 directly against my 400 if you look down the opening page.

I rode both the 450 and 570 back to back on a test day, oh and a ktm300, and there was a definite difference between the two that i can only put down to the engine size and power delivery.

i chose the 450

It feels like the centerweigth of the FE570 is placed much "higher" then the 450.
Lean both bikes over in the same way and You'll feel the difference !
I like riding the 570 but I really hate rising it up after falling or when stuck...

Lifting the bike up off the ground would or should be the same since the 450 and 570 are the same weight or very nearly so.

This was also my argument when buying a 570 instead of the 450 - no big difference in weight.
But the centerweigt must be higher on the 570 because it really feels a lot heavier when lifting !
Since I'm a big boy I can handle it but my Berg-friends (450 and 3xx riders) thinks it is a beast.
I love this machine anyhow and I strongly recommend installing recluse as this bike is so powerful that You really don't need to shift ;-) ...

The 450 & 570 felt the same to me when I lifted them in the shop. Only the 390 felt noticably lighter. Don't find the weight of the 570 a problem at all on the trails but I guess it's what you're used to. Compared to a small 2 smoke it's a dinosaur. I came off an XR650 so it feels light and nimble!

when i rode them bk to bk the 570 felt alot heavier to me just sitting on it.
i found the 570 would plough thro anything ruts/logs/boulders where as they were more noticeable on the 450.
i liked the 570 but when getting bk on the 450 after the 570 i relized how much the 450 felt lighter & can chuck it about more than 570 & to me the 450 is more fun to ride

I have a 570 and have ridden the 450/390 i didnt notice any difference in the weight or handling of the bikes.
As for picking them up they are all pretty much the same and feel a lot heavier than a stinkwheel !

No problems with the 570 through tight woods it will bite quicker than the others but thats part of the fun :D

Personally get the 570 as you can happily chug along in too high a gear or hammer the thing ,its happy doing both :bounce3:
but i am biased

I ride an old 2004 KTM 450 MXC that weighs 262 lbs before I fill it with 3.5 gallons of gas. The FE 570 is 10lbs lighter and I wonder since the gas is up high on my KTM maybe the FE 570 won't feel as top heavy as my MXC? I have ridden a 2009 KTM 530 EXC-R, love the power, and it feels so much lighter than my MXC and turns better. I can only imagine what the FE 570 is like in comparison.

I ride a bit of every kind of terrain each year and in the tight and technical, I am not trying to race, just to make it. I think am going to get the FE 570 for a grin, instead of a 450 for the win.

at force ride 3, i rode the 570, 450, and 390 back to back. same track, same conditions. same gear.
i ride at both extremes of the spectrum; from a husaberg 650 to a gasgas 300 [2stroke].
i've seen the handling differences first hand from a 650 to a 550 at force ride 1.
anyhow, the handling differences btwn the 570, 450, and 390 is quite large.
the 570 felt like a big bike, the 450 felt like a good bit more flickable, and the 390 was alot easier to throw around than the 450. the 390 is a whole differt world from the 570.
i'm 6'2" and over 250 with gear. if i could get one bike for free i would certainly get the 390.
but here's my bias. i like flickablity and light feel. so my gasgas is better than the 390, although the 390 is close and has its advantages with the 4stroke.
now if we are flying at speed thru the nasties, a big bore [650, 550, 570] will be the weapon of choice.
in the past i was 100% big bore, and that includes 2strokes 500cc. flying that warp speeds was the game.
i'm morphed into a different rider though. the more technical the better. doing trials now and i'm hooked.
in conclusion, cc makes a huge difference. forget using a scale. its the gyro effect or whatever word is more accurate. you can always ring a 390 out to maintain pace with a 570, but i doubt you can throw a 570 around to pace a 390, well at least in the long run.
but there are always exception to these rough summaries. i'm talking about the average joe, not the true naturals.

not even close. the difference btwn the 570 and the 530 is more than the old ktm to the new one, much more.
but then again i dont care for ktm's much. i think even ktm pimp rag dirtrider noted the new ktm turned ' usually wide'. a very polite way of saying they dont turn, sort of like 'friendly fire'.
all the new bergs turn tight and controlled.

Oh yeah, my 2004 KTM 450 MXC doesn't have a steering damper either, something I have been putting off until my next bike. Don't like my close ratio either.. I put 12/52 spockets on it to try and get 1st gear low enough. Geared that low I definitely notice that the performance of the bike in the open stuff is really suffering.

I rode a 2009 KTM 300 XC-W and It was very light, torque was great, and it made easier work of the tight single track we were riding in Rifle, CO, but I just don't like the 2T vibration. My hands went to sleep riding it. It had the yellow spring loosened all the way out. I think I would have liked the power delivery better if the yellow spring was screwed in a bit more. I was considering a 300 XC-W until I got to ride it.

I have ridden a 2009 KTM 400 XC-W and the throttle response is way better than my '04 450 MXC, but it lacks the power I am used to, so I know I don't want an FE 390. Before I buy an FE 570 I do want to ride an FE 450.
