FE 570 strange or normal?

Your thoughts please.

I'v had my completely standard 2010 FE570 for two months and have just noticed a strange thing.
On the dirt it's great, easily the best handling 4T I've ridden of this engine size, and some smaller. The problem only shows up on the road/tarmac, anything smooth. When at anything over 40mph it's like it bounces along on the front, if held at a consent speed you can feel it, on overrun its unmistakable. It must bounce 20-30mm, it's a bit like a badly balanced wheel or bent rim, feels like I have egg shaped rims. It's defiantly a front to rear movement, not side to side.

The bike has 30 hours on it, nothing bent, still has the original Metzeler 6 Days fitted. Not sure on the suspension settings, the rear sag is set correctly for me. Tire pressures are set quite low at the moment, I may pump them up and see how it feels. Still got tubes, not sure what rim locks.

Never felt anything like it before, without something being bent, but nothing is????????

The bike handles rubbish on black ice 8O

Make sure your tires are seated all the way around. I had a similar experience for awhile. When putting on a new tire I used to blow it up to about 40 psi and tighten my rim locks then release air pressure to 10 - 13 psi. I learned not to tighten the rim locks until I have reduced the air pressure to riding psi. Problem solved for me.

hi .we have had lots of customers complain of this and it is the rim lock throws the wheel out of balance you can either remove rim lock or get it balanced regards htm

+1 my bike did it when new. Had a tyre shop put balance weight's opisite of the rimlock. and that fixed it.

regards

yes thats what I do to mine. I have had 4mm solder wire spiral wrapped around 4 spokes opposite the rimlock for about 8 years now. I never remove it, it just sits there.

of course I went to one rimlock on the rear as well and 6-months ago fitted a new tyre 'n tube without looking too hard.....first time i went riding, my phuqin teeth nearly fell out as I had put the rim lock the same side as the solder!

Thanks for your replys. That makes allot of sence. I'll maybe swap it for a lighter one and get them balanced.

It is a mystery to me why KTM/Husaberg and others are allowed to get away in selling street legal motorcycles with such out of balance wheels. You can easily balance the wheels yourself by putting the wheel containing the axle over a pair of jack stands and adding spoke weights or stick on weights to the light side. You'll find that it takes 4 - 5 oz pretty much opposite the single rim lock. Another solution is to add a second rim lock 180 degrees opposite the first one.

hello Nick, me personally i would live with it, my KTM 300 did it, and i'm sure you had it on your GG, i don't notice it off road, i use HD innertube so like the security of having a rim lock fitted

My friend road it today, he has had allot of bike experience, on and off road, he thinks it's not right. We got it up and checked the front wheel and it looks fine. I have added some wheel weights and it has improved it but it's now where near gone. I'm going to strip the front wheel and check it closely, and treat it to a new front tyre and have it balanced at Watling tyres, which fortunately he owns.

I had the exact same problem your describing, really bad feeling headshake over 90km/h.
balanced the wheel and still had it. Fitted heavier fork springs for my weight that the suspension tuner didn't do and the problem was instantly gone. Got it up to 140km/h with no headshake on the tarmac

It's a good thought Bowser, maybe I could wind the pre load up to see if it makes a difference.

Nick,
Bowser is correct its suspension / springs not wheel balance.
I had it on my 570, its more of a pogo effect than headshake, really noticeable on the new bergs along the road and disappears once the springs/suspension is sorted.

 ok where do you get springs from? :D

FTP in BSE suffolk WERE the UK WP importer and still hold a good stock. there is no longer a WP importer as there is no more WP as such (as i understand it)or go OEM? WP is wholey owned by the KTM group now and even works out of Austria now instead of NL.
