FE 400 02 hot start and stalling problems

I have 2 problems which I think relate to the same thing:

1. Really hard to start on hot. Cold: 1-2 kicks.

2. Stalls when slightly opening the throttle from idle.

I'm a beginner mechanic not very experienced with bikes so I try to explain everything step by step.
FE 400 2002 had 17 hours and 300 miles on the clock from new.I dig her out of my mates shed, tow her round the yard and she fired up. She has been fine until I decided to give her a service at 30h, lol. Checked the valve clearances and they seemed too loose, I could easily stick a 0.15mm filler gauge under so I have set them up using a 0.1mm filler gauge. Noticed that the spark plug was black. I have also cleaned air filter (and oiled it like hell) and set up the mixture. Bike seemed much better, better response on high revs and more power, until I stalled it and couldn't get it going again on hot. It eventually started and was able to get back home. First thought - mixture too rich - leaned it out to the point when revs started dropping - and half a turn back - 2 1/4 turn from bottom position - little difference. Next - set up the valves much looser and clean the air filter of the excess oil so its almost dry now - a bit better but still almost impossible to start on hot. I have finally decided to set up the valves 1/6 turn and leave them alone(4th try), thinking that it must be fuel related.

Carb cleaned. Spark plug has a healthy pale brown color now and I can start it on hot after 5-10 serious kicks but only when I lean it so the revs are dropping down and have to compensate with the rev screw turning in,setting the revs so it idles smoothly (for some reason it doesn't seem like a right technique to me) . Mixture screw 2 3/4 out.

In the background there is other problem all the time which is stalling when fast opening the throttle a little bit from idle - it puffs and dies. when opening the throttle full its fine. when opening throttle slowly revs are going rough and then pick up after a while.

Reading the forum, learned a little bit and it seems to me like a too rich mixture on idle and low revs, but still not 100% sure what to do with it.

Carb is Delloroto and everything standard for FE 400 2002 model.

Needle - K51,
Clip - second from the bottom of the needle(third from top?),
Needle jet - 270 DR,
Pilot jet - 40H,
Mixture screw 2 3/4 out.
Choke jet - I think its 45 (forgot to note) - it will be whatever is standard on those.

I ride 100 to 400 m above the sea level. North Yorkshire temperatures about 5-20 deg C at the moment, and quite humid.

When starting from cold it is:
slightly rich on choke
bike starts well everytime but you need to blip the throttle or the revs might drop and it might stall. you have to be near the machine! 8-strokes within 10 seconds.
I have to blip the throttle, then release the choke quite fast , hold the throttle for few seconds the realese - it takes about a minute to built up to the higher revs.

So my question is:
What needle do I get and what else do I have to replace?
Where is the best and the qickest to buy it?
Can the needle be worn after 35 h and 800 miles?

Sorry for the essay, lol
Cheers

hello i had the same thing happen to me would not start when hot found out that my choke was stuck open a little bit i have an 03 400 and she still hard to kick when hot

I had a carb stripped and cleaned. choke works fine. Cheers

My opinion is lower the needle or raise the clip a notch or 2 and see what happens

schultzy man, you are a bloody genius! I can be happy again

Raised the needle by a clip and it made an amazing difference. It starts on 1-2 kicks, and also has more power on low revs.
Mixture screw back to 2 1/4 turn out.
It doesn't stall now but still a little blip of throttle makes it rough for a moment - but much better than before. I'll give it a run and maybe raise the needle by another clip next time.

I can see now how a little change has a massive influence.

Cheers

I believe I said LOWER the needle or raise the clip, raising the clip would lower the needle. My opinion your running rich and need to lean it out, I am only a garage mechanic but going by what you said I feel you need to lower the needle. I have been experiencing a rich condition forever and am now waiting for a new stator. Check your stator. Check the plug.

malin went in the right direction. the bike had a lean spot off idle and although the slide was going up - the needle was still on the straight and making the bike leaner by the mm.

having run a FE400 in standard trim i did many tests and i learnt that the needle taper start has to be at 42mm.

so if i fitted a needle that had the taper start at 39mm then it wanted to be in C3 and then just at that position it would go like snot!

agree with dan BTW.

Hi guys.

My fault. I lowered the needle - raised the clip. Being too excited didn't pay attention what I'm writing, I'm sure I'm not the first one caught up with it. LOL.
I think the bike had a 'rich spot' off idle and was flooding it.
Also looking at the needle closely it looks nackered, it has a lot little scratches all over.
35 hours seems like a short life to me.

I've read the doc (it's amazing by the way) and some other posts and I'm gonna get a new needle and atomiser and set it up to 1st setting from a doc. I wonder what can I expect from that setting, seeing how much difference 1 clip makes?

It's a great forum, for a great bike.

Respect

Hi Malin, I'm following your thread with interest. I've been having similar issues with my 400 and found that fitting the atomiser or emusion tube improved things. I'm now wondering if I should try moving the neddle to see if I can get further improvements. It still stalls a lot in tight woods riding. Mine starts a lot like yours from cold. and has the same issues with hot starting except it got better after the emulsion tube was fitted.

My settings are pretty much as yours and I reckon were about the same climaticaly speaking. I notice you have your mixture screw further out;

Main jet - 185
Needle jet - 270DR
Needle - K51
Needle clip - 2
Pilot jet - 40
Throttle slide - 4mm
Choke jet - 45
mixture screw - 1 turn out
Emulsion tube fitted

You don't mention the main jet but mine runs strong and clean on the main and at all times except small throttle openings, when it tends to stall.

I reckon by the time I get it figured out I'll have got around to fitting the 39 FCR i've got sitting in the shed. Ho Hum

I have been for a longer ride, and the bike starts well now on hot 1-2 kicks. but still stalls on little throttle quite badly. As Taffy is saying it must have a lean spot.I have to dig dipper.

MJ is 185 I recon.

raised the needle. back to clip 3. flat spot is almost gone, but still present and it stalls from time to time.
I fitted denso IXU24 plug and it starts better. Mixture screw at 1,5 turns out.
Idle speed screw has to be about 7-8 turns out to idle properly - does it give any clues?
