The purpose of this post is to get some comment happening/ experience ( mechanical expertise or just observation….your experience), generally, on the amount of trouble free hours that everyone is experiencing with the hussy 4 stroke motor  .
There is heaps of good information on the document of all potential weakness areas through the models, but I wanted to get a measure on the strengths.
Reason…and this should get everyone fizzing and putting pen to paper, KTM rider, totally converted to orange Fanta ,who is my riding buddy, was trying to tell me that he would have bought (he is a secret berg lover) the Husaberg, but they don’t have the longevity, (talking number of running hours before the head has to come off or problems with overhead cam, valve seats etc) and KTM 4 strokes do :cuss: .
He mentioned a local hire company that has 2 KTM 400’s that have done over 300 hours with out the lids off.
So, I was wondering what is everyone’s experience outside of starting, electrical problems and weep holes etc, with the berg in trouble free riding hours.
If you are talking trouble free hours please mention in context to racing or non-racing. Maybe some one could put up a vote?

Dustbites tour company put over 500 hours on their 09 450 and 570's with nothing more than regular maintenance. Oh, let's see he did have to replace a couple of exhaust valve shims at 100 hours or something. At 500+ hours he did piston and rings on his bikes, and has replaced one fuel injector that I know of.

Your buddies opine is one that is carried over from way back when the Generation 1 had problems. Important note here Husaberg fixed all the problems then that were of manufacturing origin. Those motors used oil, and if you didn't check them and ran them out of oil then poof. And those were the motors with no oil pumps, until late in that generation.

The generation 2 bikes also had their share of problems, and again, Husaberg warranted most of the problems. The Aussies seem to have had problems with the mains on the 650's. I had an 01 501 that the center cases cracked on, and Husaberg replaced them, not just the cases mind you, the cases come loaded with bearing and seals.

I also have a 04 550 that has 235 hours on it. Valve adjustments at 45 hour intervals, broke a valve spring at 220 hours, and other than that the motor was like new inside. Mix of riding and racing on both bikes, I raced the 501 more than the 550.

As far as the Generation 3 bikes go there really hasn't been too much trouble. The reason you see trouble here is this is the place where people come looking for solutions. I do a combination of racing and riding, mostly riding these days, I have one hundred hours on my bike now, and I recently had to replace a water pump seal. I did adjust the exhaust valves at 70 hours, because one was .0005" too loose.

All dirt bikes have their problems, I could go on for pages about "other" bikes having problems. Just one example, no one ever talks about the early 250x honda's eating heads every 25 hours now do they. And Honda did nothing more than sell new parts to the customers.

In fact there is one member on this site with over 350 hours and 10,000 miles on his 04 550.

As I said before all bikes have problems, the Husaberg's are trouble reputation has long since past.......

I will pull my motor down at 200 hours and have a look. So at the current rate, that means the 2009 bike I bought in December of 2008, will have the motor out of it sometime in 2011. Heck based on Dustbites record I might just go 300 hours, and that will put it out to 2012.

based on this forum the last 5 years or so its been the 550 with mains eating habits. use NTN specials instead of SKF they have a better roller end radius.

the 628 is a nice engine, one of the best singles ever made IMO, some conical valve spring failures nearing 200 hrs. just fit dual valve springs.

Thanks guys, these are inspiring facts, it is all good stuff, and as I thought from the other riders here in NZ I talk to, I have heard nothing but stories of good reliability and bikes doing big hours with no problems...through all models

FWIW,

I rarely if ever allow my motor oil to come out anything other than a darker shade of amber than when it went in.

The new motor is really amazing at how little it fouls the oil, so to speak.

It's also the best handling dirt bike I've ever ridden as well, just amazing works good everywhere with the set up I have.
