Exhaust options

I'm looking to make some performance gains on my 03 fe400e. I've tried searching for info, but am having a hard time whittling down all the posts to find what I need. I want to know what i can modify or exchange on my exhaust system to give overall power improvement. My dell orto is jetted stock, but I will have it re-jetted to go with my exhaust changes. Do I modify my exsisting muffler? Buy an mx version? Do I worry about the stock header? Do I buy an aftermarket slip-on? What years and displacements are compatible? Is an exhaust change in vain without engine mods? Thanks in advance,
Aaron.

You can get a Akro slip on that will net you increased mid to top. THere is a new 450 Ti header to fit the large can, thats just come out, it should get you gains everywhere. Check out all the parts available at www.husaberg.com, also for dealer locations. ( search for deales in both Ab and BC, as the search functions had probs when the site was launched last week. pm me if you need more details.

the doc needs you!

under the tuning section all the info is there. the headers from either the 501, 550 or 650 will fit and net you .75bhp whilst the MX tailpipe will net another .75 all the way up as well. the mx is no noisier than the FE so it's worth it.

there is a link to some carb work done by joeusa and i recommend you try it.

there is so much info there on tuning a 400 that you may even self flagulate for being a lazy bastard!

good luck

Hey Taffy,
Bro, your the best! I know, i know, i know all about the Doc. I've read you reaming lots of people out about looking there before asking questions. Being new to the bergs, I was still a little unsure of years/model compatibility. Plus its hard to understand your English-ese some times. Thanks for all your hard work in the Doc, though. Its benefited me greatly. Now if I can only find some bigger headers and an FC pipe!
PS- Should I be looking for 04-up headers so my tire wont hit them when landing 60foot kickers?

you don't need special headers, they changed the head angle the year after yours so you'll have plenty of space.

yep! read the doc and suck it up.

head angle - that of the steering head. it's kicked out so his '03 has the space for the standard pipes AND they miss the tyre.

Almighty Taffy,
So what about aftermarket slip-ons? Waste of money? Too loud? How come Doc only covers stock Husa options? I checked the sites for FMF and Big Gun and can't find any listings for the mighty Berg. Yet others have them. Whats the deal, no one makes em anymore? Special order? The Akro looks nice, but ouch that price kills.

pretty much all the development/tuning in the doc is from myself. a couple of technical points from dale lineaweaver but the rest is mine.

you want to know about exhausts well fine i can help.

all i can tell you is that the dyno gave me .75bhp for the headers and then .75bhp for the MX tailpipe. i later had a silencer that cost me just £50 off the bloke in the next village who races them.

it's an MSR and i've never heard of them before or since. it's a straight through can with packing i think. i forget right now what dale calls them.

well anyway, i fitted a race cam and had a flat spot at about 4k, i told dale at 9pm one night and he said i needed an open pipe. tested the MSR the next morning and the hesitancy was gone.

as far as viable other tests go. the only valid tests i believe were made by brit: simon. check his gallery for dyno sheets (i have two as well BTW) and there you'll se that on his 650 the DOMA was the best pipe.

this has slightly smaller header pipes. however the last thing you need is a 650 system on a 400. so it's invalid for you. for me, i have a doma and i'll be trying it one day. i now have around 40-42bhp when 28 was standard so with other tests it'll be time soon.

BTW a 650 system won't fit a 400 as the cylinder head on the 400 is about 10mm-20mm lower.

this is all i have on exhausts.

Thanks Taffy. I can already tell why your a fan favorite around here. I think I'm gonna open my own shop to make my own stuff for this bike. Bloody hard to find some parts. Hey Cerara, lose the lip or the trailboss will give you a detention.
