Engine knock 2013 FE450

I have the KTM based FE450 and since I got it, it knocks like a bastard in the bottom end. Had it back at the shop twice and they said it's fine, maybe even one of the quieter ones. Checked filters and oil and no debris coming out, but does make me nervous.
So given they are noisy and I need to accept it, where does this noise originate so that I can check it when it comes time overhaul? Is it bearing, primary gear lash, clutch?
Sounds like its gonna biff a rod. Don't know if anyone else has the same problem?

pretty sure you have a plain big end in that engine, I couldn't find a specific fiche for your model but all the 13 ktms have it

a plain big end failure isn't much to worry about (as long as the rod doesn't break) because there is Less debris created than usual

maybe post a vid of the sound on youtube .. people like trying to work out what it is

they have a roller big end and sadly there seem to be too many LDC engines having big end failure. I hope for your sake that you don't have it. I do a rod kit and a piston if you need to save a little over OEM.

The 2013 motor is the standard KTM configuration - not the 70-deg motor (LDC) at least.

It looks like this, right?:

I can't state with certainty what sort of bearing that motor has but I'd assume it was the same as the KTMs had in 2013.

That bike has a Pankl rod with a plain bearing. I have a 2013 KTM 450 SXF and it makes mechanical noise too. I never even gave it a second thought. I have not heard of any of these bottom ends letting go on the 450.

some of the first year of ktm based 450s had roller big ends, but at some point they upgraded to plains

the aust and NZ fiche's say the big ends are plain but there were a few i know of in OZ that came with rollers

same problem here, just bought a husaberg 2009 450 and is noisy, bottom end sounds like, but has 150 hours of use. strange, mite go mechanics and see what they think.

Tourist is on the money with the model. My ktm dealer tells me it definately has the plain bearing in it and it won't ever go bang, just buy some ear plugs and get over it. The fact that no bearing metal or debris shows up in the oil or filter makes me think it has nothing to do with the big end, but what else can make that much noise? Clutch seems mint and I already replaced damper rubbers which were fine.

just so I haven't started a rumour I want to clarify that I thought this was a lingering 2012 LDC model.

rumour closed!

I think its just in our heads, yours being a newish one and mine having done 150 hours 3200km cant be having bottom end problems already. Just loud engines.
Am going to change engine oil in mine and check for shaving, hopefully nothing there.

Diecast cases for a lighter engine = less material to dampen and deaden the sound, and different-sounding resonances from what one is used to?

maybe tourist

could be 1000 things :D

the best solution would be to buy a 650 and start it up every so often for recalibration of the ears

what year do you have ?

my mate was told the same thing .. sliver flakes with no source.. can't be the big end casue its a plain.

opened it up and it was a roller big end fitted at factory .. result was a trashed piston and liner
