early berg lubrication system

the early berg lubrication system relies solely on a reed valve in the crank case that evacuates on the down stroke ,then it closes on the up stroke ,but any lubrication the crank receives comes from what little bit of oil the clutch can throw up toward the oil screen that sits at the top of the crank cases and is drawn in by the vacuum of the up stroke of the piston ? (i think ?)

no wonder they eat conrods

Q any one done any mods either successful or not .

Q has anyone had a duff reed valve ,if so what effect did it have ? i am guessing at lots of blue smoke?

Hey scrap,

If it's eating conrods there's something else going wrong.

The concern about the early lubrication system (which was changed 96 I think?) was more to do with valve train lubrication.

All the best,

:) no i don't think their is anything else wrong , they just have a poor lubrication system ,couple that with a puny big end bearing and you get eaten rods much more frequently than the later bergs, just wondered if there was a mod to increase lubrication
or has it still to be invented lol.

Only 01-03 models has pressure lubricated top end. Before and after it´s just splash fed by the timing chain.

My two cents on this topic,

Scrap, you are absolutely right about the lubrication system on the early bergs.

That's why running a good quality oil is of the highest importance.

Also, the earlier engines used oil, in a typical desert race of 80 miles, my 94 would use about 20-30% of it's oil depending on how much I had to rev it. That fact alone is why a lot of berg engines failed, low oil level. This happened with Chuck Sun and a few other guys running the Vegas to Reno race here in the states, 520 miles, they never checked the oil level and they ran it out of oil.

Another factor in the earlier berg engine life was that if one lugged the bike for long periods of time, this resulted in less oil passing through the crank area. This had a particularly high degree of impact on the wrist pin bearing. For a while the wrist pins were coming with a Titanium Nitride coating on them. This was harder than the piston and the bronze bushing in the small end of the rod and promoted high wear there causing piston rocking, which made for poor starting of the motor. But the main culprit there was lugging the motor too much.

I put quite a few hours on my old 94 wth no bottom end problems.

it is actually the first rod i have fitted to the bike, but i have read that the rods on early bergs were a bit prone to failure, mine now has a beefy ktm 525 rod installed.

but not wanting it to go south again, i was looking for a method of ensuring it got oil.

perhaps i worry too much because i have no idea how many hours the previous rod had done, it was probably as old as the bike.

Husaberg added an oil pump to the earlier engines in the latter years of production. I believe they did it in 1996 but I may be mistaken exactly which year.

If you don't believe me, then check out the 1999 workshop manual in the downloads section - it covers, without doubt the oil pump. It was certainly there then...

Cheers,
Simon

i know the later bergs have an oil pump, it sits between the primary gear and the clutch basket. and no one is disputing that :) .

Orbit pump added in 97 merely pushes the oil through a proper paper filter so metal particals are removed. Pre 97 Screen was fed by clutch basket gear oil spray, and would let a small fly buzz through it. Lubrication of the motor is still the same. 01 added crank end feed full pressure lubrication.
