Has anyone installed a dual sport kit to their FE250? Does the FE250 make a good dual sport ride?

Did my 2014 FE350 and it is what it is. A 100% off road machine with a DOT tire lol. It pretty much has the ability to go to the grocery store and buzz around town. I am positive I would kill it on the highway if I rode it daily, without changing gear ratios. Allot of motard machines do well with correct gearing. I do know allot of these machines come in dual sport packages, but keep in mind that these are designed for serious endure so pavement it not where they belong.

Yeah, I have a KTM LC4 640 for long distance dual sport riding. The Berg would be doing a mix of back paved roads, sometimes 10-12 miles before going into the woods for several miles. Average speed on roads about 55 -60 mph, which my 250 does fine. I know it's a serious enduro(That's why I bought it), but I have a KTM 200XC-W for tight single track riding. I was going to use the BERG like I use my KTM EXC(RFS) 350. It's lighter and I like the suspension better than my RFS in the rocks.
Typically we ride about 70-100 miles - a mix of serious offroad and rural paved roads(Almost no car traffic) in a days ride. The BERG may fit this.

I think you will find this bike just as good as the 200 in the tight single track. I have found my 350 works just as good as the xc 300 did. I like the smoother throttle as well, find it climbs better and is way more forgiving. My exc 400 was my perfect ride but I like to upgrade every so often, the EXC was 9 years old so it had its time. I actually like the 350 better now that I am used to the wp 4cs system. I have found it powers much more than the 400 did and runs a little cooler with the fuel injection. As well the smoother throttle. The husa was quite easy to dual sport for me. I got most of the stuff from KTM and added the hydraulic brake switches as I like them better than the oem ones. I think it cost me about two hundred for everything and about 5 hours labor and fitting time as I reworked some of the harness.

I do like it on the pavement but much better on the single track :)

I did a 50+ mile dual sport ride on my FE250 this past weekend. It works fine on the highway as it can hit speeds up to about 70+ mph, though I never went that fast for more than a few seconds. Of course the bike shines when riding offroad sections. I was amazed how nimble it was in the rocky areas and I climbed a lot of serious steep hills. One I actually accelerated up to forth gear while climbing. I found if I rode it like my KTM 200, on the pipe, it worked great.

Just got back from riding. Changed my tires and added Tubliss system to the FE. Got a high speed shake now and I am sure it is all in the balance. Love the Tubliss but hate the shake. What to do? lol. It is at 70ish. Gonna play around and try to balance wheels now haha.

If you had your front wheel off, check that it is installed properly and the fork tubes not twisted. Did you put slime in the tubliss? Slime helps to balance things out. I had tubliss, hated them. Not because of balance but because of flats.

Yes the wheel is installed correctly, I even use a alignment tool when installing :). I do have sealant in the tire. I do not have any trouble with flats as the sealant worked and sealed the tire to wheel, so no air loss daily. I only have to fill each week. I do check tires each ride and adjust anyways so the tire pressure issues are not a problem, Have not had a flat yet or any other issue than the balance. I also have went to a new front tire and this could be the issue as well. Not to worried as a rarely see 70 in single track lol.

Thanks for the ideas :)

I'm looking at dual sport kits(blinker lights, and horn) and Tusk seems to be the least expensive. I already installed a mirror and rear brake light switch when I got the bike. The Tusk kit is plug and play. Might be time to let me old friend go(03 EXC350) :(

The more I ride my FE250, the more I like it! It's fantastic in the gnarly, rocky trails.

I rode a Turkey run this past weekend. Lots of roads, dirt roads, jeep(4 x 4) roads and of course serious rocky trails in the New England region of the USA. My FE250 handled everything really well. My riding buddies where riding an EXC350, EXC500 and a Husaberg FE350. Time to sell my 03 RFS KTM. My BERG handles the nasty stuff much better.

I've run my 2010 FE 450 in a lot of dual sports but find it's a beast in the tight woods/single track (for me anyhow). I would LOVE to have a FE 250 for these type of DS rides.

CJ, What kind of mpg does your FE 250 get? Is it about 255 wet weight? Thanks

I think wet weight is around 250lbs. or so. It feels considerably lighter than my 03 RFS 350 which I just sold to a friend. I can ride the FE250 all day in relatively gnarly stuff without getting exhausted. It is a light feeling bike for a 4T imo. It's fun in rocky stuff and single track. Also, it doesn't tire me out like a larger displacement bike when riding all day. You have to be ready to twist the throttle, as you can't lug it like a 450 or 570. Surprisingly, it will lug a decent amount though. I get around 60 mpg if I'm not getting on the throttle constantly. ;)

CJ,

I did get a new 2014 FE 250 and wow is it FUN! It's got a lot more power than I thought and feels so light. I rode it at Highland Park in N GA for the first time a couple weeks ago and they have some big climbs there and it just kept on going, I couldn't believe it. I can still feel the long wheelbase but you're right it's not as tiring as my 450 at the end of the day.

I got a map switch with it but couldn't find the connections, do you have one? Also got a rear brake light switch and like the map switch I think they gave me the wrong ones.

Not sure if I'll dual sport it as it really is a blast in the tight woods and I may just leave it alone (but I did wire in the key switch).

I never did install the map switch, but before I took it from the dealer, I had him reset the FI via the computer since he had the program and set my sag. The brake light switch I have installed is the EE(same as KTM of course) and it's plug and play. I never bothered with a key switch though. I have the tusk dual sport kit, which I may install this weekend. I'll take photos and post them so others can see the setup.:)
