Okay, freakbergers, I put the pshb carb back on my 96 fe600 becouse no stinkin' carburetor has ever whipped my butt! I cured the loading up\flooding problem as I discovered that the idle air bleed to the pilot jet was restricted. Among you who offered advice or ridicule, Taffy wrote,"those flat slide carbs are junk-everyone takes them off immediately". The only remaining problem I have is that the slide sticks right off idle unless I snap the throttle . Everything else seems good now. Taffy or others, I'd like to know specifically why everyone takes them off. Thanks. 8O

you mean vhsb, not phsb right?

my 95 fe 600 had one as an OEM which i replaced with a round slide phm 40.
i had to replace it due to overall excessive wear of the carb and cause the phm was cheap.

phm is smoother but i really miss the instant throttle response of the vhsb and the way lighter flat slide feeling

It's just technology i'm afraid. The old Dellorto squares could never be set right. it was something about their design. I just tune the things i don't make them.

Sorry i can't be more specific but we're getting a little 'geeky' here... go straight to a Keihin and really notice the difference. get one including cables and throttle if you can as that will save you a lot of money.

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback. I think I'll just go straight to a Keihin carb cause I think this is more an issue of stubbornness on my part than anything else. Only question is, which model and where to get it. I will be looking for a new one because I don't want to inherent someone else's tuning (or servicing). Any tips on sources would be appreciated. I ride MX and fast enduro.

there was a thread on TT about 8-months to a year ago about the cheapest place to get an FCR. it turned out that a USA honda dealer was doing them for $300 each. but you need to order the right spec and you must try to get a choke.

the owners doc tells you most of what you need to know.

See you are in KC at around 1500 feet. Why remove a flat slide? Have someone who knows what they are doing (like Jim Koenig at Letko) dial it in and then take a trip to Rampart in Colorado Springs and see what happens. Then you will know.

I have a vhsb on my bike. The sticking you are talking about if like happened to mine was the return spring binding. I fixed mine a while back and if I can remember it was the spring, throttle cable and nut were causing the binding. There is a groove on top of the slide the spring rests on and if it is off any will cause binding. Just takes time. Hope this helps.

Heyl, wild bill, doctorcorey here. Thanks for the input. I don't think what you described is what's happening to my carb, but I'll check it out anyway. You never know.......It seems that the idle vacuum is pulling so hard on the slide that it just won't close right unless I blip the throttle open pretty good and then the momentum of the slide will close it properly. Yz 400 had rollerbearings on the slide to prevent this problem, but I don't want a flatslide so bad that I'll spend 400 us to get one. My berg rips just like it is. I was just hoping to get better throttle control as it really helps on jump faces! See ya 8O
