Deep cycle batteries...worth it?

Hi peeps

Have been reading about deep cycle batteries such as:

http://www.odysseybatteries.com/

which claim to have incredibly long service lives. Has anybody run one in a berger and can confirm that they are worth 100% more in purchase price (for starting power and longevity)?

Also reading about the optimate chargers which are mentioned heavily in these forums.. would they be suggested if running this type of battery?

Cheers

Go to my gallery and you will see my sollution about stronger battery.its 3 times stronger from stock ytz 7s and has life over from 5 years.its a Cyclon.

In my experience with lead-acid batteries in general, deep-cycle batteries hold up to deep discharge much better without shorting out internally, but have less cranking amps for e-start (due to higher internal resistance). Since cranking amps is what you need in your Berg, I don´t think a deep-cycle battery will help you.

As far as chargers go, I use C-TEK. One of the best, if not THE best.

The life of your battery will increase greatly with the use of this intelligent charger. (And no, I do not sell them or in any way work for them.)

You mean drycell batterys right? Not deep cycles? I personally use a drycell in my truck because I don't drive it much and regular batteries would not last. Putting one in my bike? Well I have not had it long enough to know.

I had used that battery in 5 different bikes .twin and four cylinder.has twice or third more cracking amps from stock.in one from my yamaha Super Tennere destoy my electric start from quick turn.dont you forget my berg has 85 stroke ans is more hard from stock to turn the electric start.everything with this battery is easier.i had never have a better battery from that.

Ok, Takis, not the first time you tell us about this battery but it seems to give less cranking amps than the YTZ7S (5 Amps/H versus 6 Amps/H).

So how did you come with the conclusion that it is three times stronger?

Curious. Thanks.

Ok here is the deal.....deep cycle batteries have much heavier plates and are a longer lasting battery because of the thickness and robustness of the plate/s....I leave that there in basic terms.....they would do very well in a bike but with one small problem, a cranking style battery may have the same rating but delivers a harder initial punch in order to spin motors etc a cranking style battery does this because it uses thinner plates that are designed to discharge energy faster...I'm gonna try a deep cycle next time as I think it at least will crank longer and won't peeter out as fast.....

Me and you we have a big difrence.i dont look the papers.i make the try ans i see the results.you talk for a battery and you dont know what you talking about.try it first and then talk with prooves.

cranking amps and amperes/hour are totally different things.

mr takis did not come into any conclusions, he said that he test the battery in real life on to real motorcycles.

How do you come to the conclusion that the Cyclon is 3 times better than the Yuasa? Can you substantiate? What data do you use to come to that conclusion?

Just a simple request. Thanks.

cranking and Amp Hours are different for sure, I agree....

1 amp larger on such a small battery does make a difference.......

If that battery has a five year service life...sign me up.......
I'm with LEFROG, I'd be curious as well, with regards to the 3x's more power....

Great Thread !! I'm gettin a charge out of it !! LOL....LOL....

Amp/H is a rating for the time it takes to discharge a battery. Basically a 5amp/h rating means that said battery will be capable of a consistant drain of 5 amperes per hour for 20 hours before the battery voltage drops below 10.5 volts. This is done when the battery is at a temperature of 80F (27C)

Just in case anybody's curious

There is only one way to find it.buy it.do i look like a men with wearing a suit seating behind a desk in his office ,reads specs, and giving everywhere advices ?

Takis Likes the battery and Le frog is not too sure.

Thats all well and good. Debate will give us more information but lets keep it to the point of batterys not weather someone is bsing or not.

Sometimes cultural differences can make for misinterpretations.

Two cents:

A cranking type battery not only has thinner plates, but the surface has a sponge like appearnce to increase the surface area of said plates, which in turn increases the CCA for a given plate size.

The best thing you can do for your batteries is to keep some sort of maintenance charge on them using a battery tender, optimate whatever. These chargers maintain a float charge until they sense a lower voltage then they go to a charge mode and bring the battery back up again, then back to float. If you let the battery just sit for months and months the plates will sulfate, ie get a coating on them which will make them not work very well.

I'm not saying that the battery in quesiton isn't great, but, I have had no issues with the YTZ7S that I keep in my Berg's.

What is the part number for the Jasco battery that replaces a YTZ7S? I have found that as long as the YTZ is kept on a smart charger and the voltage up you will be O.K. The problem with the YTZ, as I see it is, should the voltage drop way way down, by using the heck out of it and then storing the bike for awhile, the battery will not recover. Even with an Optimate.
