Decompression

Hi, I currently have a 1999 FS600e, with about 50 miles on it. Yes, 50 miles. The bike has been in storage since 1999 and I just started riding it about a year ago. So the short story is that there is something wrong with the eletric starting mechanism. Starter works, but it does not catch and turn motor over. I am able to kick start it, with tons of effort. Is there a way to install a decompression device on this motor, so kick starting would not be so bad? I really don't want to split the motor quite yet to fix electric starter, but I may have to. Any help would be great.

Thanks

Jeff

Your bike already has an camshaft actuated auto decompression device. things over very easy. Does yours have a manual decompression lever on the handlbar? If so, when kick starting the bike use the kick lever to get the motor up on compression then pull in the manual lever and get the motor just past TDC, let the kick lever return to the top and give it a firm kick. I usually do this when kick stariing my 550 and the 650 I used to have as it makes it easier to spin the motor over. Do you have the owner's manual? If so, it should detail the proper adjustment of both the manual and semi-automatic decompression devices. If you don't have any manuals for it you can download them from http://www.husaberg.com/Downloads.33.8.html. There is a technique for kick starting these bikes but once you get it down they are very easy to start.

BTW, I just checked the '99 manual and the electric start models do not have the smi-automatic decompression device the kick start only models had so may not have a manual decompression lever on the handlbar.

I was afraid of that. My '02 FE650 and my '05 FE550 both have manual decompression levers. My '02 FE650 was a bit hard to kick over until I installed a new auto-decompression spring. The auto decompressor holds an exhaust valve slightly open until the cam reaches a certain rpm at which time centrifical force over-rides the spring. But if the spring is too weak it will not hold the valve open. I got a stronger spring for my 650 from Offroad Boss in Portland, OR and that made a lot of difference and also made the electric starter work better. One thing you might try is to work the piston just over TDC on the compression stroke (hopefully the auto-decompressor will enable you to do that), let the kickstart lever return to the top, and then give it a firm kick. By getting the piston just past TDC on the compression stroke you get a bit of speed built up before it comes back up on compression.

fit a later auto decomp mate and be done with it. you'll need a later steel cam sprocket and you'll have to take 2mm off the shoulder of the cam then with the new auto decomp you can slip it together and it'll kick like a little 200. might want to swop the cam bearings for sealed ones while you're there.

look up the doc for info on setting the correct ignition timing, fit an iridium plug and she'll start first time then.

Taffy
