Yes, terror related. Sucks...

AFAIK, french family killed in Mauretania (eight rally stages should ride in Mauretania), and french government advised organizers to cancel everything.
First PD rally cancelation since 1979.

A.S.O. cancels the 2008 edition of the Dakar rally
After different exchanges with the French government - in particular the Ministry for Foreign Affairs - , and based on their firm recommendations, the organisers of the Dakar have taken the decision to cancel the 2008 edition of the rally, scheduled from the 5th to the 20th of January between Lisbon and Senegal’s capital.

Based on the current international political tension and the murder of four French tourists last 24th of December linked to a branch of Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb, but also and mainly the direct threats launched directly against the race by terrorist organisations, no other decision but the cancellation of the sporting event could be taken by A.S.O.

A.S.O.’s first responsibility is to guarantee the safety of all: that of the populations in the countries visited, of the amateur and professional competitors, of the technical assistance personnel, of the journalists, partners and rally collaborators. A.S.O. therefore reaffirms that the choice of security is not, has never been and will never be a subject of compromise at the heart of the Dakar rally.

A.S.O. condemns the terrorist menace that annihilates a year of hard work, engagement and passion for all the participants and the different actors of the world’s biggest off-road rally. Aware of the huge frustration, especially in Portugal, Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal, and beyond the general disappointment and the huge economical consequences in terms of direct and indirect repercussions for the countries visited, A.S.O. will continue to defend the major values of great sporting events and will carry on its engagement for a durable development through the Actions Dakar, started 5 years ago in sub-Saharan Africa with SOS Sahel International.

The Dakar is a symbol and nothing can destroy symbols. The cancellation of the 2008 edition does not endanger the future of the Dakar. To offer, for 2009 a new adventure to all the off-road rally passionate is a challenge that A.S.O. will take on in the months to come, faithful to its engagement and its passion for sports.

Hmmmmmmmm, I believe the French voted against action in Afghanistan and Iraq at the UN, and have no troops in either theatre. So much for placating the obvious enemy of the west. The french seem to have forgotten their battle with the Muslims October 10th, 732 AD when the french prevailed over the muslim army at the battle of Toures, led by the famous French leader Charles Martel.

Isn't that like the only channel on the tube?? I really really wanted to unload on this one, but, limited myself to just a brief comment. In fact, this news even made the yahoo news page, they would of course not even commented on the race in general AT ALL.

I am absolutely gutted by cancellation of Dakar...imagine how competitors feel!
terrorism again...Do we bow to terrorists or ignore them? As you say it is on Yahoo cover page...normally it would not get a sniff!!!

What's next, the Olympics?

The terrorists have won if this is the way these events are handled.

Just let everyone who rides have guns too. Too bad there are so many ******* on this planet .Why dont we just square off with those who dont like us & GET IT ON !

No, they already did the olympics...Munich! Yes, exactly...the terrorists have won. The event could of been staged with increased security, any competitor not happy could make their own decision about entering. The french have a very strange foreign policy, and an even stranger one towards terrorism!

The truth is usually not nearly as exiting as we would like to believe.
When the facts come to light the reason will no doubt be something like the insurance company that insures the support aircraft withdrew its policy.

Europe Heighten Threat Levels

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist
threats and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to
"Peeved". Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to
"Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross". Londoners have not been "A Bit
Cross" since the blitz began in 1940 and tea supplies all but ran
out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody
Nuisance". The last time the British issued "A Bloody Nuisance"
warning level was during the great fire of 1666.

Also, the French government announced yesterday that it has raised
its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide". The only two higher
levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was
precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag
factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.

It's not only the English and French who are on a heightened level of
alert. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout loudly and
excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain:
"Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans also increased their alert state from "Disdainful
Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also
have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose".

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the
only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to
deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new
Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.is is not really what this thread is about but thought someone might have a smile.....

if the terrorist can attract attention to his cause and at the same time ruin events and proceedings then in their eyes they are successful .

have the military forces defend the rally is the only way you can allow it to continue , but the terrorist likes to hide behind a rock like a coward so the army can't cover every rock .

I knew it would end up with that type of crap. I thought we were not supposed to start political posts but I guess I allow myself to give one response (and that will be all because I have had to give that type of responses and educate people hundreds of time already and that's not my job).

So here: France has been fighting Islamic terrorism for ages, now. I remember right after the Air France flight 8969 hijack (by 4 Islamic militants who were all killed in the GIGN assault), which came at the height of an Islamic terrorist attack on France at the beginning of the 1990s, Americans in visit in France at the time told me that they were glad they lived in America, where never ever will there be any sort of terrorist attack, ever ever. And I told them to just wait. Their reaction was this:

Somehow not undermining your intelligence agencies and collaborating with foreign agencies helps prevent or prepares you against such attacks. In the AF 8969, infiltrated agents confirmed the target was Paris and that the hijackers wanted to take control of the plane and crash in a certain 300-meter landmark. Does it ring a bell?

Now, the Dakar rally was not canceled by the French authorities. They advised that they could not guarantee the security of the racers and their crew down in Africa and that Mauritania was not so safe. Did they take the right decision? I don't know. Africa has become more and more unstable pretty much everywhere. Rwanda, Chad, Ivory Coast, Algeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Somalia, Ethiopia and now Mauritania make it look less and less like a nice place to have some fun.

As for the 4 tourists that were killed by apparently Al Qaeda members, such attacks occur on a regular basis. Pretty much every other month a Westerner gets killed by Al Qaeda and they don't care what nationality he is. A couple years ago they killed French contractors working on a submarine in Pakistan. It's not like all of a sudden the French are targeted.

Dale, I don't know where you get your talking points, but you need to look a bit more into what's really happening out there and claiming that France is not acting against Islamic terror shows you should rely less on talking points and do a little more in-depth reading.

Huh yes France is a member of the UN as well as a member of NATO (how many times did I have to tell that to Americans who strongly believed the opposite until they checked Wikipedia and came back with a red face), and is the larger provider of troops and material after the US and largely before the UK, Taffy.

Taffy: do you have Rush Limbaugh in Britain too? Bill O'Reilly? Sounds like you do.
