Cutting out just a bit?

thought I'd be different and rode the bergie to work today - about a 15 mile commute 1 way.

Noticed that when 'cruising' along steady throttle about 4k-5k rpms it would 'cut out' - like it was running out of gas - starving for fuel. If I blipped the throttle or eased off it would catch right up and be fine again.

if I just varied the throttle position - never ran it at one constant RPM it was fine! Something I didn't even notice on the trail - but on the commute - it was obvious.

One time I even tried holdng it steady as it cut out and it actually died completely - popped the clutch and it started right up again - ran fine - just had to keep varying how much throttle I was giving it.

it's a 1999 FE501 I'm at 1600 ft or so - it's new to me and I don't have any idea how the carb is set up - I have't had it apart yet.

Thanks

Sounds like you are experiencing what is often referred to as surging. In your case a quite severe case as the engine stops running.
What is probably happening is that at your stated RPM the needle in the carb is allowing the engine to run very lean effecetivly running your engine out of fuel.First try and raise the needle a clip and see if this makes a difference. You might be wise to increase the size of the main jet as well.
The bright side is if you were riding a 2t you would have sweaked it!

I am having the exact same problem as gilgamesh. seems to be fine off road when your not at a constant rpm. going thru the gears its fine........plenty of acceleration and power.....but as soon as i ease the throttle back in any gear and level out the rpm it starts cutting out. I thought it was a lean mixture issue too, but i have even tried putting the choke on and it still does it just as bad. sometimes its hard to actually ride and your head is snapping forward and back.....hahaha. what is the possibility it is electrical or a vacum problem. I was gonna post a question last week about it but i wanted to wait until i had alittle more time on the seat so i could give more info about the conditions. I have not taken any action yet on the bake as I am looking for a small gas tank to tir wrap on the bars so i don't have to keep taking the tank on and off.........so far its my only complaint about the bike.......who would design a tank like that..........LOL.

sorry bout the spelling......either my fingers are getting fatter or i need to start using spell check...LOL meant to type tie wrap the tank to the handle bars

Before we get back to your poor running condition, why are you having a hard time removing the tank.It should only take a minute.!!!

well it only takes a minute but it's still a pain in the *** to have to put it back on and take off again as you try to track down a carb issue.! 8)

take tank off - fiddle with the carb - put tank on - start it - run for awhile - remove tank - fiddle with the carb - put tank on - start it..repeat as nessesary...etc etc

the job would go a lot quicker if you could eliminate steps 1 and 3 every iteration!

OK.since ign issues tend to be non rpm related, ie it will run poor everywhere,it will likley be a mixture problem.
Do a valve check/adjustment first, then clean your carb.check to verify that there is no fuel in the fuel pump vacuum line or block the line .
Check your carb is running the correct jetting as per the manual in the downloads section. Check for wear on the needle.
If every thing looks good including a clean looking spark plug try raising the needle a clip.let us no if there is any change. in the way the engine runs.

my 98 fe 600 came to me with a 38mm edlebrock quicksilver carb.A couple of dualsport runs I noticed the same thing.Workrs great in the woods but on the the street it would run and suddenly peter out like it ran out of gas.5 minutes later it starts up and everything is fine. The specs show a 40 mm so I got one from Simon and after a little tuning doesn't seem to be a problem anymore.Hope this helps.

weather is crappy here this weekend so i will have time tomorrow to try some things. I can't find the proceedures to adjust the air fuel mix. i remember someone posting a message about the rpm's when you are adjusting the mixture. if i remember right it said to have the rpm's around 1700 instead of at idle. installed a vapor today...so now i have a tach....... :turn-l:

i've had this problem under acceleration and my bike misfired. it was running very rich and after i'd dropped the needle twice it was better. i think nsman is right on this occasion BUT i would still consider going EITHER way with that needle! if raising it a clip doesn't work then go the other way.

Forgive me for sounding stupid but how do you "drop the needle a clip"?
Are we talking Dellorto carbs?

tris your not stupid mate id also like to know how to accomplish this feat as iv been told my bike is running rich as well

Tris and Mberg

Rotate and remove the carb top cap, pull up the slide carefully. Compress the spring and remove the slide from the cable, be carefull not lose or bend any parts.

Remove the needle and install the clip in one position higher if you are trying to lean out the carburation.
Reverse everything for the installation, note that the slide has a grove it fits in and will only go in one way. Do only one clip at the time, there is a big difference on each one.

Finally got chance to pull things apart today.

Needle is really gunky - think maybe it sticking?

Main jet is a 195. Needle is a K51(stock should be a K35?) clip is in slot#3 (from the bottom)

also fogot to mention I'm running a Big Gun silencer.

going to just shoot everything with cleaner and put it back together before I move anything around...

ugh - worse now.

on the good side - it does idle better and slight 'stickyness' is gone.

but surge was very noticable - much more so that before - even on a short trip around the block.

I guess I'll move the clip first since that's free. Currently with the pointy end down it is on the third notch from the bottom - theres one notch above it - so I should move it up to the last notch???

---oh forgot to mention - it also backfired pretty severly on my little test run when coming off the throttle - it's never done that before!

06 fe 650 1/8 throttle surge

At steady throttle slight surge, 175 mj,48 pj 2 turns out, needle clip middle. Raise needle 1 more or turn out pj 1/4 to 1/2? Otherwise it runs great Thanks Vern

RE: 06 fe 650 1/8 throttle surge

gilgamesh,
Just thought i'd let you know my problem seems to be electrical. i replaced the coil and purrs like a kitten. after you have tried making all the adjustments on the carb and if its still not running correctly take a volt meter and make sure your getting enough juice out of your stator. In my case i accidentally touched the frame with my screwdriver as i was tightning the positive lead on the battery. I still had just over 70 ac volts out of the stator, and after my mistake with the screwdriver i had no voltage out of the coil to either the spark plug or the starter relay. so it was something i had to replace anyway. just thought i would throw this in as it may be of some help to you.

raised clip one notch - 99% surge gone - can only find it if I'm looking for it very hard.

odd new problem - roll off throttle - keeps buzzing along at 4k rpm for an extra couple of seconds..not a stuck throttle or cable - as I checked by repeatedly rolling back to zero and still witnessed continued high RPM for a while.
