Cutting out just a bit?

I have lost track of what you have done. What groove is the clip in counting from the bottom groove up.
The reluctance of your engine to return to idle as the throttle is closed needs to be addressed.

Clip is at the top - on my needle there's 4 spaces - it started out at #3 and I moved it up one.

If dropping the needle helped you must be a little rich.Try putting the needle in the third clip again and try a one size smaller main jet.,

nsman - we're missing each other - it started out on the third clip - I raised it one - it got better but got a 'sticky' rpm problem.

Tonight I tried lowered it to the second notch and all signed of 'surge' (i.e. cutting out at steady RPM - my original problem) are gone.

However - the sticky RPM thing is worse. Roll off throttle - engine keeps merrily buzzing along at 4k rpms or so - then gradually drops off to idle if I just let it be. If I 'blip' the throttle it usually (but not always) comes down right away.

MJ is 195 (same as I started with) I haven't changed that at all - just moved the clip so far.

Might it be something as simple as a dirty air filter? They are ready to be replaced - I'm going to see if amyone local has them...

Are you sure your thr. cable is not binding and/or are you sure you don't have a air leak on the intake side

absolutely positive the throttle is not binding.

leak on intake side maybe - I'll look around for that

that sounds likely. Binding slide-spring twisted up, etc, the air leak can race the idle until theC decel richness is burnt off. Bent needle. Etc. Check float level and condition, air bleeds and vent hoses. And diaphram on fuel pump, if so equipped. And make sure the flux capicitor is fluxing nicely!

i would describe it as holding the clip still while you raise or lower the needle. seriously! it's important not to talk about "raising the clip etc" it's very confusing.

OK!

I first tried LOWERING the needle - it was horrible.

Then I RAISED the needle. Rode it this weekend for about 3 hours at 6000 ft (Utah) and it was awesome.

No issues at all -- easy starting - running strong - no tendancy to stickyness or surging. occaisional pop on deacceleration but nothing i would consider excessive or terribly unusual for any motorcycle.

Dunno - maybe the stickyness was my fat fingering something when I was moving the clip around. It certainly does seem to be gone now.

Thanks all for the asisstance

ok im lost what can you guys suggest/ 98 FC501 all stock/ i have put in a new hi flow air filter and a full big gun exhaust.
very hard to start!!! pulled the carb apart as suggested here and put the clip on the needle up one(at the top) will start easy now but when giving throttle it almost dies what next

Just by altering the clip setting shouldn't really have any bearing on how well it starts.

What's happening now is it is to lean on the needle hence the gasping when the throttle is opened. If any thing you want to be concentrating on the Pilot Mixture Screw and the Pilot Jet, check also that the float level is correct and the start and idle circuit is clear, if you think to your self two things it's either getting to much gas or not enough and the three things i have mentioned will have a bearing on starting or in your case not starting.
How well did it start and run before you altered the air filter and the exhaust but still this shouldn't have any bearing on the engine starting.

before the new stuff second or third kick everytime with out exception now like 10-20 kicks bfore she fires but when warmed up first kick

Sounds like you need to be altering the choke jet, Taffy might be the guy here he's twiddled with more Dellortos than you can shake a stick at, good luck.

I had this same problem until recently on my 400FE.
I found that the fuel line on the right side was slightly kinked as it is in the shape of an S. After getting the kink out the problem has gone.
