Connections: how do I check?

It seems the battery in my bike is fine: 12.8v. I did not have the courage to start it tonight, my left leg still hurts from yesterday  (Actually not the only thing that hurts)

The starter apparently is fine, as it worked fine when I first got the bike and it did so at Ken's house.

Obviously my connections needs to be checked and cleaned. What are all the different things that I need to check? I guess the SEM is fine and so is the CDI ... or maybe I should check them out too?

Wonder what document I can download print and read in order to fix this myself.

Sorry, I am a newbie, as you know. THanks in advance!

Go to the downloads section and download the Hard Start Guide.
It has all the information you need regarding the various values you need to test for in the electrical system.
I, like you are a Newbie, however this Guide is a great reference and helped me a lot.

Stolliberg.

I'm assuming that your problem is the bike is cranking slowly when you try to start it?... therefore I think it's unlikely that your problem will be with the SEM/CDI, but a lack of power at the starter motor?
First of all start by checking all your High Current connections.

1) The lead from the negative terminal of the battery to ground.
2) the lead from the positive terminal to the starter solenoid, and from the solenoid to the starter motor.
Make sure that all connections are tight, and clean.

THis should be a good start anyway.

Apparently a gel cell is supposed to be about 13.5 volts. You know when the battery was charged on my optimate it turned over fine. I think i would start there, with a proper battery charge and then check the wiring for voltage drops.

you could also try making a second earth wire nick. this was done std from 2003 on. it is a black, thick wire from one of the starter mount screws up to the negative terminal on the battery.

berger has it right-go through all those thick red and black wires first!

take them off, P600, star washers with nasty serrated edges, that kind of thing?

rub down the male spades, crimp up anything that was easy to unclip. make them a PUSH fit!

regards
