I have a KTM 300XC-W that I love, but might go 4-stroke too...I think the 450'd be best for me - desert, some mountain single track, some low key enduro races....But what's the advantage of the bigger displacement bikes...? Does the power make them feel heavier than the 450 (like my KX500 used to - what a tank...)?
Thanks :!:

I have a 07 300 xc-w and 06 FE650e, the husaberg for the desert is the best , I use my 300 for single track...

It's impossible to give you an empirical answer. Big strong riders sometimes don't notice the difference. Some guys like Scott Summers or Danny Hamel went faster on the big bikes in tight stuff. But, some riders do claim a lighter faster feel to the 450. I will just say that you should have been at the Bergfest at Moab, and seen riders like Fritz Kadlec on a 450, and try to imagine yourself being that fast anywhere.

What's the difference between 450, 550 and 650? Torque is the answer for me. Maintaining revs, and momentum up a hill is what makes my riding enjoyable. The 650 and a little clutch will climb anything, the 450 needs a gear or more lower and gets wheelspin and loses momentum as a result. But I'm big and heavy.

My 501 compared to my new 07 650 feels like a soggy old mattress.

Go the grunt
Steve

PS, you'll really need to ride them to decide for yourself what works for you.

Hi Steve, how long have you had the '07 650 ?? done many kms ?

any issues with it so far ?

I'm looking at geeting one as well and keen on getting feedback

Thanks guys. I'll find some 'bergs and give em a go...

I was working a checkpoint in a desert race with the Vikings club and saw Danny Hamel race back in the day. He was leading, flying across a valley and it sounded like he was on a 125. I couldn't believe when I saw him come through on a KX500. I didnt know a 500 could sound like that...
