i have a crank stripped and the inside of the rod is more worn more on the fringe than in the middle. careful inspection shows it to be the cage scrapping all the way around the inside of the rod - obviously always going with gravity etc.

the rod has given the inside cheeks of the crank a right old scrape - over .020" in parts. still going though!

hi taff, how many hours on that bike?
i know from personal experience that the con rods in this engine are bullet proof unless you keep lugging the bike which is an abuse.

it is 600 or less?

it's a 500 MX machine. it's a beautiful rod, it has a double I section around it and looks like a piece of art! i doubt that it's been lugged. i insist that the cage has worn around the rollers and "dropped it's nickers!!!!".

it's a Y2K so hours are never going to be known....

do you thing that changing the big end bearing from time to time (lets say at 80 hours) saves the con rod?
its expencive though (90 euros i thing)

a rod kit is all we can get here now. i think i had the last pin and bearing for a few miles around....

we can't measure the microns of wear at present but it's something i'm looking into. if you work on the principle that tight equals safe i suppose renewing it is good but you can't renew what is worn....

difficult call.
