Just to let you all know that the last two rounds of the British SidecarX championships have been held over the last two weekends.
Last Sunday the 2nd October the first race saw the long anticipated battle between the Millard Brothers on their Husaberg 660 and Stu Brown on his 628. after a gap of two months during which both Brown and new Passenger Chamberlain were badly battered in a crash in Holland they all finally met at the end of August and the Millards for the first time ever disappeared and left Browny - even overtaking HIM for good measure.
Brown isn't the greatest Jumper but the rest of his talent is abundant and his 8 times as British Champion prove that he's reliable and can take any pressure. Every time they put pressure on him - he wins still!
so Brown's 19 point lead was just 10 for last weekend. the conditions were dry at Canada Heights and Browny got away in first even though he was behind the Millards into the first bend. He was tracked by Dan the rider and then on a jump he took Brown and immediately pulled a lead. alas a lap or so later the motor stalled and Browny re-took the lead.
Millards got going again but made no impression until among backmarkers he started to gain considerably. on the last lap Brown took a catiously wide line but that put the Millards behinbd him as they crossed the line. one more lap... it could all have been different!
HUSABERGS were 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th. AWESOME!!!
In a horrible race 2 for the Husabergs, Browny left the line again in the lead and the Millards moved up behind him fast. On an uphill table top the Millards overtook Brown but out of sight at the top of the course both outfits broke down seperately! and only a few meters apart.
The millards had had the screw that holds the chain guide on the powerside come out and that had jammed the outfit in gear. Brown had an electrical fault (i believe) while on that very same lap at the bottom of the circuit Steve France's mains went and that made the ignition rip out of the left cover - one we've seen before!
added to that a rider in third stalled and you'll understand all the spectators were having a job "picking up the leader". quite extra ordinary!
In race three with the points lead now just 13 still between Brown and Millard it was still all to play for and this time the Millards took the lead from the off and were pulling a small lead at about 1 second per lap. Alas the engine expired at a downhill hairpin and Brown sailed by to win and make the championship pretty much his. The spot welded stopper on the cam sprocket had come off and stopped the engine.
The win by a Zabel in the middle race had been the first non-Husaberg win of the year.
and so to yesterday's final round at Wakes Colne in Essex. Browny had a big lead but it didn't stop him gaining a 1-2-1 for the day. Awesome! For the Millards I believe they had a crash and a tip-over and the race Brown didn't win was a Zabel win again but as it stands the Brown/Millard duo look to be Husey mounted again next season again and their stranglehold is set to continue.
STATE OF TUNE
It is difficult to know for sure but it would seem that both Brown and Millard use the steel shouldered bearing housing in the mains as well as the Trachiod Bearings that are kinda barrel-shaped in two rows so they are kinda rollers and have the flex of a ball crank as well.
The Millards have settled on a 102mm bore (660cc) and have reported no problems with the motors this season. this is after major problems with 700s in the previous season. They run MX flywheels and ignitons so they only have a kickstart for starting the bikes. I know that Browny tried a longer stroke motor but for some reason the flywheel end of the crank snapped off and it was abandoned!
although the Brothers Ballard have developed several cam profiles and Bellmouth Combos, at present the Millard team are happy to be reliable.
they feel that next season could be the last that they will use Husabergs old 628 based engine but with fresh cases this winter they should be able to build some solid motors again. the trouble is, there are 400 things to go wrong and as the motors get older they only have to have each gremlin once to bugger their season up.
