For all you Aussie riders. I will be traveling to Australia from the USA next week, and find myself with a couple days of free time around the 22-23rd of August, when I will be on the Sunshine Coast for a holiday. Anyone with a spare bike, and a bit of spare time interested in showing me some of your favorite trails? I have been there a few times visiting family, and every time I go, I am sure there are some hidden gems somewhere between the Glasshouse Mtns and Nambour that I need to ride. I was last in the area a few years ago, and I saw a number of muddy bikes being trailered from somewhere and have wanted to ride there since.

Let me know if something can work out with someone in the area.
Thanks,

You are not wrong in guessing that there is some great riding in the Sunshine Coast hinterland! I would love to stick my hand up and assist, but at this point in time the 3 dirt bikes in the shed are non operational.

The mighty Berg might be back in action by the time you get here - depending on the source of the metal fragments that have turned up in the oil. I'll know more once i have the engine pulled down (job for tomorrow), and keep you posted.

There is a company based in Noosa that hires out bikes - www.aussiebiker.com.au - i know they do the trusty old DRZ400's and they may even possibly have some pumpkins (KTM's) lurking around. The organised ride they do is great for site seeing, but is pretty open and flat riding (beaches, sandy tracks etc...). If you like hills and trees then head west about 40mins. SCAR tours cover a lot of the trails that i ride, but i'm not sure if they can get hire bikes (just checked their website www.scartours.com.au and they have a hire arrangement with aussie biker).

If the whole bike scenario can be worked out I would be happy to show you some of the trails around Kenilworth (Google Earth - 26°32'25.50"S, 152°40'48.62"E) .

Thanks for the reply. I will look into the rental thing at Noosa. I tend to stay away from tours, as they generally mean too easy terrain, and lots of stopping and waiting. I prefer to maximize my riding time. I should have access to internet, so I will be checking my email for updates. I leave here on Monday, for a week in South Australia, then on to Maroochydoore(sp) and then Fraser Island.

Finally got into my engine for a good look after tracking down a puller to get the stator off. Looks like i didn't even need to make the effort. Problem appears to be a faulty cam chain tensioner spring. The spring in the tensioner has bound up/broken up and jammed the adjuster with it only 2 clicks out. This has caused the timing chain to stretch prematurely and start rubbing on the casing just below and opposite the tensioner blade.

I am now very happy that the shiny metal in the oil is only alloy and not an indicator of a looming catastrophe, and the fix should be straight forward. Mostly i think i'm happy i didn't need to break the cases apart.

Getting on the telling bone (phone) to Orangeberg for prices now - hopefully the bits will be in the country and my yellow baby can be bought back to life before next weekend .
