Bridgestone m404 rear; max safe speed on road sections?

I replaced my '10 FE390 reare tire with the highly regarded Bridgestone M404 and got a Michelin Ultra Heavy duty (4mm thickness natural rubber) inner tube fitted also. I will get a matching 403 front when the OEM front wears out.

This is the first non-DOT\not-road-approved tire I have purchased on a dirt bike (so I can't wait to test it in the dirt).

I always trailer the FE390 in and out of single track, but am asking;
"with tire pressure at 12 psi, what is the maximum on-road speed I could ride at safely if I had to ride out via sealed\bitumen road if I absolutely had to ie emergency, got lost etc - what is others experience?"

thanx in advance

ive run my 19" 404 (120/80/19) at 120- 180 km/hr for 5 -10 min bursts on gravel

don't think anyone would call that safe though?

180Km/hr? on gravel? 8O
I'm putting having a beer with you on my things to do list Bushie. Are you sure your speedo wasn't stuffed?

spose it could be a couple ks out... just a couple it gets hard to read after 160

beers in the fridge for ya Davo its a weird interstate import brand, 4 letter word. must have been censored at the border cause its all crossed out 8O

we do have emu export over here tastes similar to the QLD import its affectionately known as "wife basher"

on a serious note i think bridgestone says 120 km/hr is OK? Steve knows

I have used these tires since they have been out on a 570 and 450 and go as fast as either bikes will go with std gearing on asphalt and dirt and have never had a problem and have never found a tire that can out perform it in the conditions that I ride in. I always test tires people tell me work well and always go back to the Bridgestone. For what its worth!

Thanks for the responses.

A 'M' speed rating of 130km/hr, and the max psi for this tire is 32.

The M404 at 12 psi, (usually would go 24 psi on road on a rear DOT tire) looks like 80km/hr will be all good and hopefully won't come off the rim, based on the real life stories here.

FWIW, my understanding on the Not For Highway Use label is that it means its not rated for speeds in excess of 130 kph, or 80 mph. Same as retreads, which are OK for highway use here in Oz. The max tyre pressure is actually the pressure at which it carries its rated max load, and it will handle higher pressures, but not more load.

The rating is a US DOT thing and to the best of my knowledge its not referred to anywhere in regulation here in Oz. Its just that authorities spot it on a tyre and think 'beauty, gotcha'. But as I said, they don't know what it means anyway. Ask where its OK to exceed 130 kph on an Oz highway, nicely, and you might get away with it. Take it to court, if that is the only thing wrong.

Its also an insurance cop out to some extent too. When my Tubeliss failed, on a sealed road at the time, if insurance was involved, it could have been messy as the Tubeliss is not intended for road use.

12 psi in a knobby could be a bit low on a sealed road at speed, but I reckon up to 100 kph bursts and sustained 80 kph is OK. Go faster, put a bit more air in. To some extent, pressures will sort themselves out as a tyre heats up, ie more heat, more pressure. I have a TPS on my GTR and its interesting watching the pressures rise as they get used. If you start out with a low pressure, the tyre can get hotter than it would otherwise, and the pressure goes up accordingly. The problem here is that the termperature goes up too, but starting with a higher pressure keeps the temps under control, and we all know temp kills tyres.

I have been using the 403/404 combo for years on the motocross track. Great tires.
I did try them on my Husaberg and they did perform very well on dirt.
But at the time I was riding some dual sport with some 20% street mixed in.
I run 11 to 12 psi on the track but around 14 to 15 for dual sport. Even so they did not feel
good on the street. At around 40 to 50 mph the front started feeling oblong .
Like a fromph, fromph, fromph kind of feeling.
You know what I mean??
The rear also after a little while longer when it got heated up I think.
I thought I was getting a flat. It felt that way.

thanks guys for these replies - really appreciate it. I now know what is safe and what to expect if forced to 'road it'. At 12psi I'll be in 'limp mode' < 80km/hr with confidence. Thanks all.

Can see myself having a few quiet beers in the shed checking out the 7hungie :eek:ccasion5:
Never tried EMU export, couldn't possibly bash the wife, she unleashed the cash for the 570
Your bike track looks awesome too. Must see if can spot it on google earth.
Have not seen many posts from you lately, ya still around? :hello2:

the demographic of typical EMU export drinkers refer to its colloquial name as "foreplay". nice eh :? I drink OP rum dunno what they call that.. always thought octane boost sounds appropriate

yeah still around Davo, have been on "holiday" with the family down to Bremer Bay, first "holiday" for me in seven years, lovely missus had the plan to take me away from my shed and the farm so I couldn't dissapear all the time but managed to find some Tourists who rolled their Prado and needed help  lots of fun getting it going again flip it over pump the oil out of the engine, new oil in and fire up the smoke machine

also have been a couple of fires to sort out close by and then a local constabuleery put a yellow sticker on my beloved 1980 Diahatsu F55 truck basically cause it looked rough (I use it to chase fires and move bees around) so its taken up all my spare time the last 2 weeks, went over the pits yesterday so now I got more time but the sheds been filling up with broken bikes.

tis a fine afternoon for a ride im off to do some laps...
