Bought a new 05 FE650e....Carb Question

Just bought a new 05 FE650 today and tried to rejet the carb because it was so damn lean, it was hard to keep running. And no....I didn't have the hot start knob out. The main jet was a 178 and the pilot was a 45. I raised the pilot to a 48 with a large improvement during starting and warmup....far less backfiring and quitting.....AND the pipes didn't become CHERRY RED after only a few minutes of running!!! Since I was already there, I upped the main to a 180 too.

The problem???? This has GOT to be the most crammed into place carb EVER! I could barely pop it out of its manifold boot and tilt it CCW with the bowl out the right side at about 15 degrees MAX. This was barely enough of an angle to allow access to the bottom drain plug for the main and pilot. And then those small side frame triangulation braces just about prevent any access to the carb at all! The TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) and the red "Hot Start" button REALLY cause extreme interference problems with those frame parts when trying to twist the carb for drain plug access.

Anybody have a better way to rejet? Heaven forbid should I ever need to change the needle or it's clip position!!! Oh....almost forgot...anybody burnt themselves badly yet trying to pop the choke button back in after letting the engine warm up for a little bit??? FAAAACK....that damn choke button is sooooo close to the pipe, I just sizzled the shieeet outa my finger fumbling to shut it off!!!!! WTF, over....... Back to top 8O 8O 8O

i bet you a pound to a pinch-a-salt thaty your needle straight is too large or 'fat'!

could you give me your jet settings?

especially the needle code and the pilot air jet size?

Rustie,

Its a piece of cake the 3rd time, and you may forget about the burnt finger, but the next time you reach in there and burn it again, you you will remember. :D

The needle comes out easy, with the carb just rotated but still in the rubber boots.

Welcome to late model Berg ownership, you are going to like itvery much.

I am running a 50 pilot and 180 main in my 04. I still fell it is lacking, but is much better. The pipes no longer turm dark blue. I am waiting patiently for Dales kit. It took me 4 trys to come up with this combo. It's like anything else, practice makes perfect :D .
I rejetted an 05 Husky last night, that sucked!! They say just loosen the clamps and rotate the carb, right..........

Hi rustie,
on another point is to keep your eye on the silencer, the back tyre starts to rub when your rear suspension is compressed. A couple of large spacers sorts the problem.

these bikes have had TPS for how long?

last year?

this year?

something is very wrong if you're running 180MJ's and 50PJ's.

very wrong indeed!

TPS since 04. It didnt seen to make much difference if it was unplugged or not. The 05 450 husky has an FCR as well. It had a 180 main and a 55 pilot from the factory.I took it down to a 175 main and a 45 pilot with a custom needle.

the main jet is a very good factor in deciding the hp of a bike. i'm running a 158mj on a 400 and you're running a 180 on a 650. this just doesn't stack up.

i have yet to read any comments regarding the wall thickness of the 650 but a thin pipe is going to blue. it's how it goes and not what it looks like for this one.

blueing is part of life when you have thin wall downpipes.

we'll see next week.

Hey all,
My 05 FE650 was originally jetted with a 178 main and a 45 pilot. It was a real bear to start and would barely run even after a good warm-up and then shutting off the choke (it's inrichment actually). My head pipes weren't so much turning blue, but rather ORANGE HOT after just warm-up idling!!! 8O 8O 8O

Once I changed the pilot up to a 48, starting became MUCH easier, less choke time was required, and the pipes remained opague (NOT orange hot and almost translucent!!!) I also changed the main up to a 180 for a little extra comfort. Of course the pilot change was the big difference. I think I will go buy a 50 to have just in case.....

on my mild tuned cilinderhead +Doma exhaust.

50 pilot and depending on temperature from 175 to 182.
Works very well(air-fuel on dyno),

but with a FP exhaust are these jets way too rich,so just make them leaner.

Tafey,
Eye hav kno clu as to wut mi "jat nedel" siz/nombur bee. Wutevr cam stok en mi '05 Kiehen is whot eye curantly hav. Saam wit teh pilet "ear jat" siz. Thet damm carb is waaaay to friken deficult too twest too evn cornsider atemting nedel remooveal.... :p :p :p

when i was over at TT, one day, a member casually says "oh, my dealer cuts a blue wire on every bike he gets".

with that everyone found out a midrange hesitation they had. cut the wire-it was gone!

apparently it retarded the ignition for the 'run by' tests when getting the bikes plated for the USA. nobody else had the blue wire in the world.

maybe worth checking a euro and USA wiring diagram to see if husaberg had to do the same....

I like your 50 pilot idea, a small piece of vent tubing works well to remove needle just press it on & pull.also I jetted 2 05 650's at 250 ft.
50 pilot,3rd clip up from bottom,stock main,2 out fuel screw. :) :)
