'05 FE550 jetting issues

Try the intake rubber clamps had the same problem. Also 55 pilot seems to work better on my bike than the 50 starts easier ect every bike is different on jetting so dont think you have to stick with a 45/50 that everyone else is using. Another thing to check is the adjustment screw still the has spring/washer and o ring still on it.

Yup, the washer and O-ring were there. Everything was tight, slide plate was right side up (I was hoping it wasn't, then I'd know I fixed something).

Twist tie wire through the pilot circuit seemed to hit slight resistance and then break through, but I couldn't really tell whether there was a clog or the wire just kinked. Didn't see anything come out.

I put the 48 back in.

Am glad to learn the jets can be changed through the float bowl plug hole! Getting the rubber boot on and off is the main hassle. If i can just turn it in the boots and get to the bottom, life just got a lot easier! :D

No joy.

Back where I started, with a 48 PJ, screw is 4 full turns out.

No, the jet can't be changed without completely removing the carb, there's no room for it to rotate inside the frame.

Put the 55 back in. Am wondering what to do, I'm getting $@#!&* tired of pulling this carb.

I WOULD HAVE IT AT 2 TURNS OUT AND I WOULD TAKE THE WHOLE CARB OFF 1 MORE TIME AND CHECK THE BELL MOUTH IS TIGHT AGAINST THE CARB AS THESE 2 BOLTS CAN COME LOOSE WHICH COULD LET AIR AND DUST GET IN IF THEY ARE TIGHT UNDO THEM AND UNDO YOUR PILOT AIR SCREWS TAKE OUT ALL OFF YOUR JETTING AND BLOW ALL PORTS WITH COMPRESSED AIR .
LET US KNOW HOW YOU GO.

Thanks, Titan, you were right on about my last big problem - main seal backed out and disintegrated...

The bell mouth is tight, but it still could possibly be leaking. I'll check it.

I ran a wire through the pilot circuit last time I had it all apart.

Maybe I should just raise the needle, but I think that shouldn't make a difference at idle.

I'm tired. Wrong number at 1:45 am today, maybe got one hour sleep after that.

Wish I had a 60 or 65 pilot, I'd put it in and forget about it!

I would still take the bell mouth off and take both air screws out and blow compressed air through them incase they are blocked if the ports or the air jets are blocked it would change the mixture .

you can change the jets on a 650 through the drain plug without rotating the carb

putting the pilot back in is tricky need a special screwdriver and some electrical tape

I'm a little surprised that nobody running one of my jetting kits hasn't come to YOUR rescue here. a kind word putting you right but not coming from me would be very beneficial to you.

anyone out there still breathing?

regards

Taffy

Sorry mate forgot to tell you about taffys jetting kits as well i put one in my 06 450 big difference as well.

Re: '07 FE650 jetting issues

Might have to just get a jetting kit and start over.

It's just that, the bike runs so well; the problem is just that the pilot adjustment is in danger of vibrating out.

Something is probably still fishy - clogged passage or whatever, but a jet kit isn't going to fix that.

For this weekend, I'll put in a 65 or 70 PJ if I can get one, that should take the adjustment back to 2 turns or so, and I'll see how that works.

P.M. Taffy he will walk you through your problem as well he has helped me heaps and he is the gurru on bergs any probs hes always helped me out.

Found a 60 PJ locally and put that in, now the pilot adjust is 2 turns out.

That should do it. As long as the bike continues to run great no matter what I do with the throttle, I'll consider it fixed!

Lessons learned: Changing one jet size may only make a difference of 1/8 turn. I thought it was making no difference, but now I think it was, but I wasn't paying attention to small differences. To get 1 full turn takes about a 10 difference in jet (50 to 60 for example). The other thing is, just jet the machine! Do what it takes, and go on. I keep getting told there's something else wrong to go that high on PJ; time will tell. Bikes are different, carbs are different, and there are a lot of tiny passages - manufacturing variation could create significant differences.
