Hey guys a bit nervous, first post.
A bit of background. I live in Australia on the mid north coast. Land of endless single line trails and hill climbs. I own 3 bikes, a 1981 tin tank WR 430 Husky, 1987 WR250 Husky and my pride and joy 2009 FE450. I purchased the berg with about 2000ks on the clock? well thats what the speedo and the old mate that sold me the bike tells me. I have put a further 2000ks on my baby with 15 hour service intervals but last ride I noticed a whiring noise coming from near the water pump, so I thought. Kept an eye on the water temp while I rode the 2 hours home all good. Started the berg the following day all good till the motor heated up some and I could hear a slight knock in the motor, NOT GOOD.
Off to the mechanics, oil filter full of metal and alum fileings, pulled motor down. Scoured piston and barrel, big end 4-5 mm play, VERY SAD DAY. s_ _ t happens, Anyway anyone else heard of a similar problem.
The real reason for the post, does anyone have a spare motor they want to sell me or where is the best and cheapest place to get Berg parts from as the cost of parts alone looks to be over the $2000 mark locally. VERY VERY SAD.
Enough sadness I still love the BERG and personally think it is the best handling bike in single line trails I have ever ridden.
Cheers
Sorry for the length of the post

Sorry to hear about your engine.
Just wondered is yours the new style engine or the old one, 2009 was the cross over year as i believe. ?.

Thanks for the reply mate. Yeah it was the 70 degree motor. I have not heard of any other. The only symptom was the whiring noise on the water pump side. It did not loose any power or make an ugly sound like it was going to stop. Pulled it down and found a lot of metal fileings in the oil filter and magneto side of the motor. After a full investigation i need to replace barrel, piston, both oil pumps, crank kit and main bearings. Very costly, but you get that. Just unlucky but who knows how the first owner treated her. Hopfuly back in the bush in about 3-4 weeks. Will have to ride the old husky till then.
Cheers Richard

Bad news, Yours is the first one i have heard thats gone wrong.
You must have an idea of the cost to do your motor up.
i have a 2010 FX450 engine sat on the bench that im going to sell. PM me if you would be interested in it, i could find out the cost to ship it to you. ?.
mark.

Cheers for the offer of the motor. I could not wait so I have purchased all the parts online. The cheepest parts were from KTM USA and TAFFMEISTER. Would you beleive there are no KTM piston kits for the 450 in Australia, whats doin there. Just to buy the parts is $1400,saved $800 buying online, lucky I have a mate thats a bike mechanic so I just have to grovel to him and buy him a beer or two. I just had a ride with my boy and a few mates on the old 430. I tell you it still holds its own in the bush, had a ball on it. The front end let it down a bit but the rear ohlins twin shock handled it beautifully. If you are ever in Australia give me a yell and Ill organise a bike and take you for a ride in the north coast rainforrests. Cheers Richard

Just remember to buy the beers after he's done the technical stuff!!

Good luck with your rebuild.
