I removed the engine to have the frame powder coated, with the engine out of the bike I upgraded the chain tensioner slinger to the 2003 model.I put the bike back together and now the bike will not start with the E button or the kick starter.I tested for spark and I have it,I even shot starter fluid in the air intake and the spark plug hole still the bike will not fire at all.The bike started fine with the E button before I did the above work.Any help would be great.

mrk3cobra.

Hopefully you have gone through all the obvious things, make sure you have gas, petcocks are turned on, carby is set up and functioning properly, all electrical wires are connected correctly and have good contacts. After all this is done the only thing I could think of is that while doing the cam chain tensioner somehow you got the timing out of sync... you did not have to remove the chain to do the tensioner, did you fidget with any of the timing stuff??? Check your valve clearances to make sure all is good there as well??? Another thing to check is that your auto decomp is set correctly.

Regards,

I did not remove the chain to install the tensioner.I checked the valve clearances when I installed the new tensioner and they were correct, so I did not make any change.Timing was checked but was right on so I did not change.Still not sure why the bike will not fire with the kick starter and starter fluid sprayed into the carb.

I just downloaded the hard to start info.I tested the resistance red/black at 2.88K ohms.green /black 164 ohms.I tested voltage at red/black with the E button of 34 volts ac.I tested voltage at green/black with the E button of 2.5 volts ac.I have not tested the voltage at the plug yet I will buy an adjustable ignition spark tester tomorrow.Seems like the electrical is ok. Any help would be great.

Your SEMs test data looks good. You stated you have a spark.

Turn on the fuel petcocks, and lay the bike on its side. Fuel should run out of the carb overflow vents. If it does, and the plug isn't wet from trying to start it, I would put a tea spoon of gas in the engine through the spark plug hole or air box and try to start it. If it fires and runs for a few seconds and then dies, then I would suggest that your jets are gummed up from sitting while you were working on the frame etc.

Let us know how this works out for you!

Regards,

Joe

mrk3cobra,

You mentioned that you had the frame powder coated... I would go through the electrical wiring and make sure that all of the ground wires are touching bare frame metal as maybe after the powder coating process you don't have good grounding somewhere. I have read in many posts that this is a problem that can be overlooked and can have the results you are seeing. Hope this helps.

Regards,

Did you add a second ground cable from the battery neg to the starter mount? It was not standard on the 2001s.

Does the sprague make the engine chug or just whir indefinitely? May be your sprague is worn out. Mine is and I will remove the entire assembly until I can afford a new sprague. I too have a 2001. Starter motor upgraded to longer SM-14, brand new battery, even tried the 24v mod (two 7s in series), all of this useless since the sprague is OOO.

You were lucky to e-start your 2001 cold!!! Unless you did or had some modifications done?

Joe, I did put some fuel down the spark plug hole and it did not fire,I have removed paint from any place there is a ground wire, and yes I have a second ground wire to the started bracket.I bought a adjustable ignition spark tester and will check how strong my spark is tonight.

I tested spark with an adjustable ignition spark tested and I was only able to get the spark to jump 6mm and the spark tester says thats only 7KV.The tester shows that the spark needs to jump 13mm to get 20KV,seems like a long way to jump the spark to get 20kv.Has anyone use a tester like this,7KV is way to low if this tester is correct.

It seems your stator is going. Same thing with mine. Could get a nice spark up to over 20KV, now it does not bare to SE.

Prepare to play Taps.

When I test the stator I get 34 VAC at the red/black and 2.5 VAC at the green/black, I think that shows a good stator.LEFROG When you got over 20KV how far did the spark jump, was it like 1/2" my tester shows 1/2" to get 20KV just want to be sure that my spark only jumping 1/8" or 7KV is my problem.

OK so I tested the adjustable spark tester on my sons XR 70 and I get 35KV and it jumps about 5/8" so my problem is week spark. With the above readings on the stator does this mean I have a bad coil? Or could it be something else.

Due to the age of your bike I would guess its the stator. Mine timed out on my 01 470 a year ago. Same symptoms really. Had it torn down a bit and upon reassembly the spark started failing. Purchased a new stator and it fired right up.

I didn't take a multimeter to it because I figured it was about time for a stator anyway due to how old it was. Also it didn't pass the visual test. A nice big fat blue spark was not to be found. The puny little spark was intermittent and then just went away all together. Even if your stator is not the problem right now it will be soon.

Checked the spark on my 03 with the electric starter for you, and it jumps the gap on my KD spark tester fine. The KD unit looks like a surface gap spark plug and the gap is 7.5 mm. Have never seen an engine that wouldn't start if it could jump that testers gap with a strong blue spark.

I will buy a new stator this weekend.I removed the stator and cleaned the rust with WD40 and I got a 14KV spark and I was able to start the bike.I price the KTM starter for $161.00 does anyone know if the a ktm flywheel will work with a 2001 fx470e husaberg. If so does anyone have the part number.
