Berg stopped - air filter sensor?

Hi Guys,

2012 fe450 stopped and will not start again, winds over, got spark etc... I noticed fair bit of oil in filter box, could it be the sensor in the air box the reason it will not start..mate said its most likely cause?. Rode the bike pretty hard for 100kms then stopped dead on rough section ... If so how's the best way to clean it out ( little white sensor tube in filter box ). Process of elimination as if that doesn't work, I'll strip it down and check for electrical short somewhere.

Thanks

tap starter button and listen for the pump. no sound equals bad pump. not sure if the 2012's had a dedicated fuse for the pump.
the oil in airbox is normal if you overfill and or ride over 100kph for extended periods. the sensor in the box (air temp sensor)would set off an FI blinking code and I have never heard of one failing.
check batt terminals for looseness, wiring behind headlight, and wiring from kill switch. if not these things, get back to us.

Fuel pump comes on etc when start it, checked all electrical system without striping the bike down...Took out air filter and tried to start it and it wouldn't, pulled out choke and it fired up, soon as put the air filter back in it stops.

It will start with choke in or out but dies as soon as the air filter is put back in.

Cleaned the sensor, bit of spray ( mist ) coming out of breather tube when I accelerate ( normal I think ).

I'm bit confused now what it could be..any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

That mist from the breather smells and looks smokey, which is why when I put the air filter on the sensor senses no air and cuts it out, as it starts to die I take filter out and it comes back to life.... Hope this is not something bad engine wise... Sorry for the stupid questions but I got no idea what's wrong with it...

That's a intake air temp sender in your air box, even unplugged the bike will still run but throw a 13 flash code. Check the plug on the fuel pump where it goes into the tank at the down side of the air box, have a look underneath as well some wires my have moved over to the exhaust and got singed. Also the main harness runs on the left side of the air box and down the frame spar and past the shock and can rub badly there.

Thanks mate I'll have a look when I get home from work tomorrow.

Just seems weird why it cuts out once the air filter is put back in....

Cheers

It really seems rather strange!

Maybe the tension from the air filter and tensioning lever causes some iffy wiring to drop out? Try taking the filter itself and only installing the frame?

The filter is reasonably clean of course, right? :)

Yeah it's clean

Just tried it with just the frame and no dramas, put dry clean filter in and instantly cuts out.

I can place my hands over the filter box and it cuts out within seconds

I'll start to strip it down and clean all electrical connections tommorow, if I can't find the issue then it may be something to do with the fuel injector???

Would be worth a cleaning! Search the site for posts about "battery injector cleaning jon andersson" :)

gremlins

I've had an injector clog and it was noticeable before it totally failed. lots of popping and backfiring. I've had the boot that holds the throttle body on crack and tear before (improper mounting and heat combo). Inspect that perhaps. How long have you had the bike?
how many hrs?
Previous owner?
In Perth i assume there is a lot of dusty riding?
Does the bike drive fine w/out the filter on or does it bog down under load?
Do you have to throttle to get it started? normally vs. now?

I've had the bike since new, got 70 hrs on it, fair bit of dusty riding but last few weeks have been dry, yet to ride without filter ( will do when I get home ) throttle is the same as, don't need to turn it for it to start... I'm leaning towards either a bad earth somewhere or injector needs a clean.

I'll start stripping it down tonight and search for bad earth, I'll try and clean the injector myself. If that all fails then it's into the shop I think $$$$$$$$

Jon,

Yet to check compression, need to get myself a compression gauge etc..

I'll check the wiring and injector and go from there. It most probally something really simple.

I have seen many bikes with over oiled filters not run. Combination of valves out of adjustments and lack of air flow. If the bike runs without the filter than it is requiring more air flow for sure. What does the plug look like when you try and fire with air cleaner installed? Plug weak and out of gap? I would clean the filter and put in dry without oil and put a new plug in and check from that point. If the bike runs fine then oil the filter and proceed from that point on.
Hard to diag without seeing the spark and the plug.

Bikes now in the shop.... Compression ring snapped, Pistons burnt and to top it off the barrel is scored anough to warrant replacement..

Any good aftermarket barrel/piston kits obtainable in Australia ....considering going away from OEM.

Shop can get a OEM kit for about 950 bucks..

Cheers

Well that explains the oil in the air box. Right on with the compression test Jon Andersson.
Sorry Mark but I have no suggestions on the after market parts, good luck bud.
