Anybody tried a new SEM CDI from HPI?

I took my 2002 FC550 out last night and it just died without warning... I haven't looked at it yet... but I'm doing the armchair diagnosis while sitting here at work today... seems like an electrical issue to me and it could be something very simple... there were no signs of problems before it just quit. My stator is a sparks rewind with very few hours on it. So... without knowing the slightest thing about what the problem might be yet... I start assuming the worst... that perhaps my old SEM CDI ignition just decided to quit. Upon looking around, the obvious option is Taffy's repair service... certainly a viable option if this is indeed my problem... but I like to know all my options and a bit of searching came up with a company called HPI (Horse Power Ignition) that lists a replacement CDI module for the older SEM Husabergs. Has anybody tried these??

http://www.hpi.be/applist.htm

Look in the application list... both SEM and Kokusan Husabergs are listed.

Hi Duane

You are in stress :D I advice you to check first the stator, even with low hours

I think HPI and electrex are the same products ??? But the guy from HPI is much nicer, we allready exchange some mails, and never got a decent answer from electrex !

Never tryed the HPI CDI, but from the photo it has the coil separated from the control unit.
You could ask some questions, I'm also curious, does it has the 2 ignition curves ? It has a menu box with a lot of options, what options do we have ? How much does it costs ?

If you find out, please post it

Hi!
I think electrex buy cdi and stators from hpi.(Hpi is the manufacture)
I have bought my cdi from hpi to my 03 and it works well. Theire schematics sucks but i just colormatched the wires and it worked fine. I bought the one whit 2 curves. I think its possibel to ad differnet/ more curves but i didnt buy the cabel to connect it to my pc.
It was 150 euro i think. Pretty cheap for brand new stuff!

Check your stator first as zaga says! It only takes 5 minutes. Sparkplugcap is also good to try also.
Good luck from sweden /John

Hi guys... I wasn't too stressed... just being curious and didn't have time to do any testing. I've always worried about losing my riding time without having electrical spares for this bike.

It is my stator... did some checks and I have an open circuit between the black and red wires. Back to sparks for another rewind!

I'm still interested in the CDI from HPI... but I don't know if it's worth trying to keep this 2002 model running.. it has worked very well for me over the last 3 years that I owned it.. but I've done all the maintenance above and beyond.

Hi

This stators suck !!!

Until now, I haven't found the perfect solution, but I will ... eventualy

About maintaining the bike, that is very true, they are hard to maintain, but I don't know why I still think its worth

Duane, thanks for the info, if it lasts, it seems a preety good deal.

I*ve got a programmable unit from HPI on the shelf if somebody needs it. Quit trying to implement it as I turned into fuel injection instead.

HPI's CDI doesn't work well with the Husaberg 400. Too much advance..
And no refunds if it doesn't work with your bike!

Hi

This an old post !

How much advance are you getting ?

Have you checked the stator ? are you values correct ? specially the green/black ?

Did you went all the way with the stator ? You can try to slot the holes of the stator to give you a bit more of tuning, never tried that but it's a possibility.

If you want I can repair your old SEM unit for 120eur.

I have an electrex stator in my 1995 501. They look well built. Good lighting. Bike starts right up. Good price. Good instructions on the website. Quick shipping. Glad they are making great products for many different old bikes. Nothing to complain about.

We're not talking about stators buddy!

Zaga! I had the same idea a few days ago, so I had the stator holes machined. I can't return the CDI anyway so I thought, what the hell!
Will give it a try in the next few days and will post back with the results..
