Am I nuts to Dualsport a FE450 or FE550?

Any body got some luggage for a 550???????????

Actually... I used a tail bag for a ride I went on. Also, I have some panniers but have never fitted them to the bike.

Not a good picture, but I had the rack made then attached the bag to the rack. I had to make some brackets to better fasten the rack to the frame of the bike but it survived 750 miles...

Not smart enough to make the linky worky but I think a set of dirtbagz and a dry bag is the ticket for a week out.

I'm doing the TransAm Trail this summer. We'll start in Colorado and go all the way to Port Orford, OR. Currently I'm setting up an XR400 for the trip, but I've been entertaining thoughts of running the 'berg instead. The distance for us will be 2500 miles. On the XR, I'm figuring one oil change and no other routine maintenance. The Husaberg would take an oil change every other day, and would require at least one valve check...doable...but I'm not sure advisable. Thoughts?

I don't know what kind of trail that is, but I assume a lot of two track and dirt roads. I can't say that I'd want to do that on either of the two specified bikes. 950 Adventurer would be sweet for that. Maybe there is a lot of single track, in which case I'd be riding the Husaberg.

It is in fact most dirt roads and two track. The problem though with a trip like this isn't what most of the terrain is like, but how bad SOME of the terrain is. The Husaberg isn't necessary, but there is no situation in which I enjoy it less than the XR. Well ok, there's maintenance, but while riding I always like the 'berg better.

As for a 950, I'm not man enough to handle one of those over the mountain passes in Colorado, while loaded with camping and other gear.

You could put an oil cooler on the Husaberg so you get more oil capacity. That'll be a lot of seat time, which bike would be MORE comfortable for a ride like that. If it was a true trail ride I'd say take the Husaberg, but it sounds to me like the XR would be a better choice.

On the other hand, I'd bet money that no other Husaberg rider has done this ride? You'd be the first Husaberg rider to do it.

I took my bike on a 750 single track ride and changed the oil 1 time and was pretty hard on the bike... I think kelsow has done a DS ride on his 450. I don't recall his maintenance regimen during the ride.

How would the maintenance of the KTMs compare? As I understand it they are similar, just harder to do on the KTMs. :?

The KTM holds 1/2 a quart more oil, which is a slight advantage. Two screens and two filters, which is a PITA. Filters only need to be changed every third oil change or so, though. Otherwise, I'd pick the Husaberg. The valves on the Husaberg hold adjustment better than the KTM as well.

Tire pressure-check. Gas- check

Ride.

Now you're tempting me. I was the first (and possibly still the only) guy to ride an IronButt (1000 miles in 24 hours) on a KTM 640Adventure. Among a circle of about 5 people, I'm pretty famous for it, and the TransAm trail on a 450 Husaberg could secure my small and obscure place in the annals of history.

That's good, because if anything, an iron butt will be a requirement for a 2500 mile dual sport ride on a Husaberg. Do it and secure your place in history.

I believe I am the first person to ride the complete MCCCT on a Husaberg.

That was a trail ride my rear end was screaming at me with about 400 miles left to go!
