Aluminum flakes in screen.

I did my oil change today and found
flakes of aluminum on the oil screen.
The bike has 30 hours aprox. total.
I change the oil every 4-5 hours or
after a hard days ride.
These flakes are as goes:
3-about .030 across
5-about .020 across
about 20-25 .001-.003 in size.
Could these be clutch basket
wear items?
Is it about time to trade it
for a KDX,garden tractor ,etc.?

t-jet,
I wouldn't be too worried. Some early 02s had an aluminum cam sprocket or more likely they are from the end of the cam chain tensioner.

Obviously keep an eye on it but a few aluminum flakes aren't uncommon.

Shouldn't a cam chain tensioner be a hard
plastic wheel or guide?
How many hours will it or an aluminum cam
sprocket last?I have put 10-15 hours max on
it since I bought it.The dealer said it had
10-15 hours on it.
How much to replace these and upgrade
to 04 parts?

Aluminum slivers developing after initial run in is most likely a result of the cam chain tension assembly being out of the adjustment range.

Remove the 10mm hex cap on the rear of the tension assembly, the two 5mm socket screws and finally the tension assembly itself. If the plunger is all the way out you have found the source of your trouble.

Slivers are the result of a loose cam chain shaving the engine case and if applicable the aluminum cam chain wheel.

Kind Regards,
Dale

With the shape of the slivers, small, thin,
and cupped that makes sense.
If the tensioner is shot what all has
to come apart?

t-jet-tim,
The tension plunger is near the end of travel on some engines as delivered. It is often required to fabricate a new plunger end to obtain the correct depth.

I remember when I did the first oil change on my 1998 Ducati 900ss and found HUGE slivers of metal in the oil. It was scary. No problem though, I guess it was normal.

See ya,
Nick

Hi,

I also have a 2002 470, with 10 hours on it. Yesterday when I changed my oil I had little metal slivers in the oil screen as well. It scared me also, but hope it is normal!

Greetz,
Jeroen

Hi,

no no that´s not normal. I rode my bike for 40 hours . I never had anything like metal flakes in my oil
until last oil change. As lineaweaver already said: check your cam chain tensioner and have a look
in which position it is. If the notch is in its end position the chain scratched
your crankcase. You have to change the camchain or the camchain tensioner plastic thing (guide). They redesigned it in 03. It produces more tension to the chain.
I don´t believe that you´ve got an aluminium cam sprocket in your engine. When you check your cam you´ll see it. But if not, please reply.

Hey hey,

come on, that is really no reason for selling the bike.
There can be much more heavier damages at other bikes.
Above all at non Husaberg bikes.

It just feels like an early warning sign.
I have rode this bike 3 times up north
and twice at my sisters house. The cost
per hour for riding seems a little high.
I know I will take a bath on it but I work
six days a week and on the week end
when I get the chance I would like to ride
not work on the bike.I have changed the oil
8 times counting the six when I drowned the
motor. The valves were less than .002 on the
intake when I adjusted them one ride ago.
I dry out the stator after every wash. I charge
the battery every week and the night before
I ride it so that the estart will work.
I would like to go up north this weekend but
now I don't dare ride it until this is resolved.
I was just ready to keep it and have the suspension
reworked.This bike gives me a love/hate relationship
thats driving me nuts.It reminds me of some of the
high maintenance women I dated years ago.I
wish now I would have bought an 04 FE or
another 300EXC. Well enough whining,it has
been an experiance, and it was a blast to ride,
still the best handling thumper I have ridden.

changing the camchain and sprocket and the camchain are the same as the final drive chain-you change one with the other or you change the chain early and save the sprocket. basically, it's the last 1/3rd of chain life that shags out the sprocket!

here

my info sheet if you need it.

Question;

As I stated here before in this subject, I also had little metal shivers on my oil-screen (the filter behind the oil-drain-plug). It weren't many, I would say arount 10 shivers.

My bike has 10 hours and 290 km's (180 miles) on it. I can't imagine this could already be the camchain tensioner. Any other ideas?

Thanx!

clutch drum is another favourite. point is-they all doit and we're telling you not to worry unduly!

Hi Taffy, my English isn't that perfect, what do you mean by above reply?

Very nice manual bytheway! Very helpfull indeed. Question though, it says that Delo Oil is very good for the Husaberg's. I saw a cheap ad for this oil, but didn't buy it 'couse I didn't know the brand. Is this the oil you use (see picture?)

Thanx en greetz

Bill don't fret, Aluminum is from the cam gear, it's a 470 thing. Just deal with it, just like having to kick start it when you first start it. change your oil offen. My FX470E has the stock aluminum timing gear with almost 750 miles on it, im not sure what that translates into hours ran? The aluminum gear particles will become much smaller, as soon as you break the engine in. Also my battery is stock and has never been on the charger, it still starts the bike just fine, as long as you use your leg when its cold, or the first start of the day! This winter I'll be installing new rocker arms, timing gear, balancer and maybe a new timing chain?

I haven't kick started my bike since the second ride.
It estarts cold as long as the battery is topped.
I checked through the oil fill today, the basket has
no play but I can pry the camchain back 3/32"
with a small screw driver with moderate pressure.
It does not feel sloppy, but I will pull the tensioner out.
Sorry about the negativity.

Hey 70marlin,

You suggest that the flakes should get much smaller once the motor is run in?
My beast still has flakes in the oil at every oilchange and now has about 9000km on it. (That calculates to at least 200 hours!)

All this makes me wonder what in fact is wearing out 'cos it must be worn pretty thin by now!!! :?

Cheers
