a special or not?

was at dodington near march yesterday for my first MX practice for 14 months and in the corner of the paddock was a FE501e. turned out jonathan from 'moto x' was there testing a v-twin kawazaki quad and i believe the ktm450 that i raced against him a month ago (see 'lt hadham' in race reports) parked next to the motorhome was the next bike to be tested-a FE 501e.

without a word of a lie the chain was dangling down 2" so i'm glad to say it wasn't tested. who the hell would deliver a bike like that and why?

anyway, i looked at the seat and it said '501' and i thought "the last of the dell orto carb and old ignition models'.

wrong! it had a keihin on it and it had the new ignition cover denoting kokusan etc.

have i got this wrong but i thought that this was the final year of the 501, that it would have the old ignition and carb on it?

correct me

either way i think we can expect a write up in about 2 months.

No taffy your not wrong I pick up a new 04 501 on wednesday with all the 04 mods can't wait.I'm having the black rims on from the options list and a rhino silencer, what should i do to the jetting to cope with the new silencer.

i don't know how open the new pipe is compared to the FE501e? is it an MX pipe? if it is i would go up just 5 as i believe the MJ is on the safe side from new.

so your '04 is coming with the keihin and kokusan-yes?

Taffy

I know that Husaberg did release a number of 04 FE501's but I was told they had the Keihin carb with SEM ignition.

It would be great if they decided to continue the 501 with the Kokasan ignition.

Most likely a simple bore reduction to an existing 550 would create an impressive 501. Perhaps said 501 is just that and simply being used to test the 501 market and / or as a means to liquidate remaining 95mm piston inventory.

Twistthethrottle,
There is indeed a 04 limited edition 501.
The bike is essentially a 2004 chassis with a 2003 501 engine. We had about 10 of these bikes. As the engine is a 03 engine they had a SEM ignition with a Dellorto carburettor. Some selected dealers retrofitted the Kehien carby at the pre delivery, but it was not a "factory fit". If you check my gallery there are pics of the carby swap.

is there anyway that the SEM ignition would be fitted behind the new cover with the wires and stuff coming out at 7 '0 clock instead of at 11 'o clock?

i can believe one but i can't the other?

this just has to be a FE550e or i suppose a 450e with a 501 seat on it. thing is, does the magazine know this!

i got that 'another nerd trying to tell me the model changes' look from one of the magazine writers, indeed he virtually walked off as i was speaking to him so i got the message and left.

this, i'm afraid isn't ethical whichever way i look at it and what with the christian iddon write up last year i can't believe that the dealers and the factory put up with it.

the british factories were famous in the fifties and sixties for the hacks cooperating appropriately when the bikes dropped their guts on the driveway etc but this is just silly.

i bet gary grover wouldn't do this and he's the only british dealer i know who has prepared bikes consistantly for magazines.

that probably leaves only one man!

The 04 501 is a sleeved down 550 with a 95mm piston as dale has suggested it is a proper 04 bike with all the 04 mods .

dollar

where can i find details on this model? i've been into the official husaberg website, official husaberg literature and it isn't listed.

there is the 'force' special with it's black tinted livery but this bike i saw was a good 'ol fashioned blue and yella!

even the uk dealers haven't heard of it. husaberg say the 550 has taken over from the 'legendary 501'.

Taffy

Phone dave clark oops sorry you can't can you.I've picked it up and it is a 501 in the literature it calls it a 501 and in the parts manual it lists a 04 501.In the TMX clarky has an advert and he lists them there they do exist.

my opinions of DCR are well documented so i don't want to call him ever again. fact is the husaberg literature doesn't show it so unless it's the special i have to question where from? i don't trust HIS literature only HOEM.

either way i don't have a problem with you unless you want to start something?

i don't trust him. if you have good experience then let us know but you, having been told what he's like, i now know from previous dealings in human nature that you're unlikely to come back here and eat humble pie and admit that you aren't getting good service or a straight deal.

play it whichever way you want dollar

501

Hi Taffy, the FE501 that your talking about is listed in the 04 owners manual. Under technical data it says it has a FCR-mx39 Keihin carb on it, and the ignition system is the Kokusan. I`ve seen these bikes in the flesh at your mates place and know someone who has one (goes like a dream)You can download the owners manual from the official site.

Enough said!!! :wav:

Taffy

On the husaberg site they talk of the Force Edition '04 FE501.

"All motorcycles are EU homologated and will be available in summer 2004. The FORCE series will include the following models:
ENDURO: FE450s, FE501s, FE550s
SUPERMOTO: FS450s, FS650s"

Go to http://www.husaberg.se/bikes/force.asp

biggish

i've stated several times 'unless it's the special' etc etc but thanks anyway. it's comforting knowing that the parts manual lists it

Taffy in the past two years i have had 4 bikes off DCR he has always given me a good deal this time he has thrown in the black rims black plastics and rhino exhaust all free in the deal although he has taken back the old wheels. This time last year i bought one of those US fx470 it has to be said it was a bad bike and he took back off me after 6 months of problems and gave me a 03 501 with 20 hours on it.The new 501 is nothing like the 03 bike it revs a lot easier without using as much throttle and the general build quality is a lot better. You even get the switch for using the computer this year it is much more like a ktm build but with berg qualities we all love.

P.s sorry if you took offence i couldn't resist the wind up,and it's dollars not dollar.

Hi fitty cent, I mean dollar, sorry DOLLARS:

Can you get a gallery and post some pics of the bike that is not supposed to exist. At least in the configuration that you have described.

Husaarse,

no make that husabutt
