'99 FS seat height/suspension travel

So, a friend recently brought home a very nice '99 FS600E. It's a fantastic bike but has a couple of problems.

First, my friend is 6'7" tall and the bike is too short for him. Looking at the bike, it appears that it may have had the suspension lowered. Is there any way to tell short of disassembling the forks/shock and inspecting for spacers?

Second, this bike has the Edelbrock carb. I seem to recall that this carb came as OEM on, at least the US, FS bikes. I had one of these carbs and installed it on both a Honda XR650R and a Husaberg FC600. I recall, in both cases, experiencing a float needle problem where the needle would get stuck in the seat and starve for fuel. My friend is having this problem and it is extremely frustrating. I have researched it and found that it was a common problem with these carbs. Can anyone tell me if there is a fix (short of swapping to an FCR)?

I'm seeing pictures showing both conventional and USD forks, and won't claim to know the right number, but how much fork tube is exposed?

This one has the conventionals and the exposed tube length for a factory stock FS (or, for that matter, FX, FE, or FC) is what I'm hoping to find out.

I'll ask him to check. Hopefully it's just a matter of removing some spacers and having the seat built up in order to get it to a comfortable height for him.

I did some google searching and it appears that the carb is a lost cause.

it wouldn't surprise me if that era FS was lowered somewhat from the factory - my FS570 appears to have less travel than my FE570 and they're the same year.

just look at any old photo of one without the rider on it and look at the angle of the swingarm. that is all you need to do for the rear.

The FE is a very tall bike.

I have original '99 seats and sidepanels. rad shrouds. orignal '99 decal sets.

cheers

Hmm...looking at the '99 owners' manual indicates that they had the same suspension travel and seat height across all models. Plus, I don't see any mention of the Edelbrock carb so that may be aftermarket.

Taffy, would you have a seat cover to fit this bike that might have enough fabric to adequately cover a seat that has been built up a few inches...say, maybe 2 inches or so?

if the manual indicates the same suspension travel and the same seat height across enduro vs supermoto, I bet the manual is wrong: a supermoto with the same suspension travel will have a lower seat height than the enduro.

maybe I'm missing something though

Junkie,
I think that Husaberg made both an FS and a Supermoto in '99. The one my friend has is equipped with all of the enduro parts (21"/18" wheels, longer kick stand, etc). In the manuals, Husaberg refers to this bike as the "Elduro" which was a street legal enduro bike.

However, being as tall as they were, I wouldn't be surprised if a previous owner had it lowered. Just trying to find out for sure.

you said FS600E, I thought FS = supermoto.

wouldn't that be an FE600S? or maybe I'm just confused.

F = four stroke
E = enduro (other options are C = competition/MX, S = supermoto)
600 displacement
E = electric start

Ok, I knew that I had read this somewhere. I have a copy of a "Husaberg 1999 SM" document that states "Dual Sport USA - FS 600: Edelbrock Qwiksilver 38" as the carb! So, it appears that the Qwiksilver WAS the standard carb on this bike!

It appears to be a service manual...huh!...that would explain the "SM" in the file name. So, I'm mistaken in that there was no supermoto in 1999. Therefore, the "FS" has to mean that it's a "street" model.

I understand that, in later years, the "FS" designation referred to a supermoto and that a FE570S would have been the dual sport. However, I think that this bike pre-dates Husaberg's adoption of that terminology.

Apparently there were FR (Rally) and "FM" (?) models as well (in addition to FE, FS, FC, and FX). Maybe the "FM" was a supermoto somehow? I've only seen reference to it on this site and in no documents anywhere.

I think you'll find that they made a FE400S, FE501S and a FE600S and that had the designation 'Enduro II' on it. it is an enduro model but with the MX tank. It has all the usual electrics so I'm guessing that the tank was the only difference. but in the broshure there's no FS supermoto model. there is of course the Quad!

Elduro means that it is electric start.
so if you had the Enduro, you had kick start.
if you had the Elduro you had the electric start.

so;
Enduro = long tank and kick
Enduro II 'S' = MX tank and kick
Elduro = an enduro, leccy start, long tank.

Ok, I finally had a chance to take a close look at this bike, and in the presence of a tape measure. The length of exposed fork tube is 19.5" (495.3mm).

How does that compare to others with these old conventional forks?

320 rear 280 front. Only a kit for super moto in 99 and elenbrok not from Berg but was popular at the time. Check under seat to see if top shock bolt moved up. If front not 280 then black spacer in fork probably cut off 30mm.
