95 FE600 possible Stator issue?

I recently picked up a 95 FE600.. It ran day one, day 2 it started acting as if it had a fouled plug, which is blackish but not wet. It has electric start but has become very hard to start and almost impossible to kick start. I am thinking the Stator is failing, ohm reading BK/RD = 1630 BK/GR I think was inthe 60 range. I will check it when I get home from work tonight. It started yesterday and sounded good, not sputtering or missing, as soon as I crack the throttle it dies. Any input is greatly appreciated..

Hi

The readings of the stator change a bit with temperature, so it can be also that.

The stator can be starting to go, but I don't think it's what is causing you the problem

Thanks for the reply. I can't seem to isolate. I replaced the coil with an extra I got with the bike . I got it to start with little effort on choke, let it warm up a little and it kept running without the choke. As soon as I crack the throttle it bogged, died, and would not restart. This is after I rode it a few miles and put it on the stand to change tires.I checked and cleaned all wiring on the bike to make sure all was tight. This has been ongoing for a week and cannot find any solid reference material for my 95. Any advice or reference is VERY WELCOME AND APPRECIATED.

All markings on bike and registration says its an FE 350 however the stamp on the cylinder is 600cc. Suspect a previous owner dropped a 600 engine in a 350 frame.

Hi

Don't know if the bike was running good before and certainly started to give you problems, that was also good info.

If I were you I would first, check and clean carb (record all of your jetting info) and check valve clearance (give it a bit more 0,12 or 0,14), then you can start thinking of other things.

Thank you for your time sir. I gave the carb a quick look previously and found your Delortto cleaning guide yesterday.. Very good stuff. I will pull the carb and give it a better look. I know it has a MAJ 195 and 48 Pilot will look into it further. I have the original manuals but they do not have any specs listed. Any idea where I can find specifics for a 95?

Hi

No problem, I just don't remember to have a dellorto cleaning guide ?? maybe I did ?? :D

I will try to find stock jetting on older manuals, but what dellorto do you have, the original jetting probably is the same as my 98.
I'm sure you will find jetting options here in the owners docs or in some post, probably you will want to go a little leaner than stock.

Hi again

The oldest I could find was 98, so here it goes:

MJ Needle Jet Needle Clip PJ SJ Mix Screw
FE600 195 DR 272 K51 #2 45 45 2 out
FE600S 172 " " " " " "
FC600 " " " " " " "
FE600E 195 DR 270 " " 40 " "
FX600E " " " " " " "

This is STD. jettings

The site doesn't understand the spaces so it's a bit of a mess, hope you can understand :D :D

Thank You very much !!!!. I believe its a PHM38MM. I will have the carb apart tonight and verify exactly what I have. Going to clean and double check everything. Seems odd it will start and then die and so on.

update

I cleaned the Dellorto, running 190 MAJ, 35 P1, 45 P1, no start jet, 2 turns out, could not see any markings on the needle but second clip down. After cleaning it fired amazingly easy, let it run for a bit to make sure she would continue running. She started a second time warm and ran beautiful for about a 45 min test ride. Started easy this morning and ran for about 10 min and back to original issue. Bogged and stalled. would not restart so I got my exercise pushing it again... Intermittent issue not making any sense???

1625 is low and a possible sign that it is on the blink at least. what you could do is put an old fashioned ignition timing strobe on it and see what happens when you get that flat spot? suspect that the spark goes missing!

I have Mk1 stators in stock.

Hi

You must be confused with the jetting, you must have a start jet :D
Also the needles worn and a sign of that can be the fact that you can't read what is written there.

Have you checked valves ?

Anyway, you say intermittent, and almost every time, intermittent means electric.

With that readings some stator will still work, others maybe not ?? Your best option is to rewind your stator.

Thank you for the input... any idea where I can find some shop manuals for this bike? Is there any way to find out exactly what year engine I have by the stamp on the case? Frame and paperwork say its an FE350 but the engine is stamped 600cc.?

Hi

Shop manuals I only have 99 but it's not very different.

Also I've made one doc about ID the year of the bike, it must be somewhere in one post, but if you send me your mail I can send it to you. Or you can check the numbers in both cases and I will tell you

Cheers

Issue was the stator. Runs like a champ now just doing some fine tuning..

I thought the electric start FE600E didn't come out till '97.
I have the shop, owners & parts manuals for the 97/98, but most of them came off the UHE site years ago anyway.

Which way is the flywheel/stator arrangement? The 97 & 98 had the flywheel fitting over the stator which was bolted to the engine case. The 99 was the first to have the stator bolted to the side cover.
