650 fse starting prob

Hi,
The bikes been stood 1yr, but started regular...used to start 2nd kick hot or cold but i took it out for a run and after only 5 miles the bike wont start up.

It fires and even runs for a few seconds then dies ,when i finally got it running it ran fine but would not restart hot or cold (but fires)

Iv cleaned the carb and changed the feul but no difference, the bike was fine untill i took it for a short run ...any ideas

ps, checked the plug theres a spark and fuel was present

if i didn't know better i would say that you still have fuel starvation. you may need to do it again. you don't say which year it is which isn't helping any. if it's a '04 and newer you will possibly have a fuel problem but if it's '03 and earlier it may be the SEM ignition.

i think you have an ignition unit packed up. the simplest way to find out is to swop with someone and try theirs.

it's not carb i'm sure now you've explained a bit more.

I would try a new spark plug anyway. The spark may be present but not adequate. If it gets fuel and wont run with new plug I would check ignition system. My 01 650 would foul a plug now and then, so it can happen.

Hey Dude

I had a similar problem with a XR250 i left standing for 6 months.
Cleaned the carb like you and replaced the fuel. It was doing my head in thinking it was electrical. In the end i looked into the carb again and found small particles blocking the pilot jet. Cleaned the carb and it was ok for a short ride then same problem. Turned out the carb was still gummed up and the carb cleaner wasn`t shifting it. I left it in a container full of vinegar for a week then flushed it out , problem sorted.

Thanks guys, i had lent the bike to a mate prior to it not starting...gues what it was.

The idle screw needed turning up, hence why it was firing but not running :roll:

The bike runs fine now, by the way how many turns out should the mixture screw be on the standard carb ?

Approx 1.5 turns give or take 1/4th
