6204RS2 as roller rockers in 02 03 ?

Just curious as to whether this info under common faults in the doc is correct. My inlet roller is on the way out and this looks like a cheap fix but is a ball bearing sufficient as a roller on the end of the rocker ?

Cam follower bearings pre '03: They all go eventually. They break up and enter the engine ('02 only). It's due to the viscious ramp speed of the cam creating pressure on everything around it such as follower, camchain and cam bearings. Cure is to change to 6204RS2 which are sealed bearings and retain their grease permanently

How many hours on yours Dan? I've got 150 now and I'm planning a teardown this winter. I've got an 03 so how can I tell which type of bearing I have fitted?

Dan
I'm no expert here but I don't reckon a small ball bearing will take the load.
The standard needle roller has a hard enough time and that would have heaps more load capacity.

With an 03 you could have either type but most likely have the later upgraded 1's with the 7.6mm pin.
Either way at 150 hrs they are time bombs. Keep your ears open for noises and your eyes on the oil screen.
There are still some rollers out there (or there was) if you look hard enough otherwise you're up for the complete arms.

that looks like a typo - and two mistakes. it's a description of the cam bearings and they are 6201's anyway, so not sure how they came about....

Loz My 03 400 has around 80 hours on it and has the older stlye rollers with 8mm pins, everything in it looks good except for the pin, I cannot seem to find an 8mm hardened pin anywhere as yet.
I did not think a small bearing would be up to the load of a rocker roller.

Coastie are you suggesting to just rotate the pin ? I hadn't thought of that but would prefer to replace it.

Taffy I never said there was a typo, but the way that it reads sounds as though cam follower bearings can be replaced with a ball bearing.

Dan

just tell me where it is and i'll set it right. where is it?

Taffy Sorry wasn't sure what you meant. Its in the doc under section 9 - common faults, its in the first section in there.

P.S I just bought a 04 FE450 motor in bits should you need any. I,ll check out the cam and followers, hopefully they are better than mine.

Yeah, it is best to replace them but you can do it to get the last bit of life out of the old style rollers/arms before you bin em.
You'll find that the hardening wears on 1 side only. Hardly the best solution and you obviously can't do it if they're too bad or your asking for trouble.
Was that you who just scored that engine off ebay?
I think the rocker arms changed in 04 and they stopped the pressure oil feed around then too.

i turn the pins over on older motors where the pins seem loose but turn out to be ok. in that case its a fantastic idea.

the boys on a budget appreciate that kind of thinking.
