I find a lot of what you say true about my 450, but mine is also a nice play bike replacement for a DRZ in my case.

Walker Valley is now my local area (the 3 other areas that were local have recently been closed to public access by a new timber management company). Capital forest is 160 miles south of me. Actually, I think there are 3 areas in Canada that are closer to me, but take longer to get to and from due to bordere lineups.

even though it was a trip i had family down by capitol forest so i went often walker was always a blast though especially when it got wet

My first impressions. First ride in months.
This bike turns better and seems more flickable than my 04 650. It seems to be a little less stable in the high speed washes.
The motor starts first kick hot or cold. Starts instantly off the button when warm. The motor pulls smoothly with no big hit or surprises. It really seems to put the power to the ground. I may be lacking a little of the hit due to the spark arrestor I fabbed and the fact that it is no where near broken in yet.
The stock suspension is very good and is improved over the 04 (I was very happy with the 04 suspension). I may have to install some heavier springs (or lose 40 lbs.).
I installed the Rekluse from my 650 into the 496. The performance of the Rekluse was marginal in the 650 but appears to be spot on in the 496....very nice.
Not too sure on the fuel capacity of the fuel tank. It seems like it only holds about a 1.5 gallons. I got just over 2 gallons into it with the aux gas tank under the seat I was hoping for 2.5 gallons total. I will have to do some more investigation into the matter.
I would tend to characterize the bike as more of a well honed tool used for carving up trails. All buisness....where as the 550's and 650's tend to be real go fast bikes with a very large grin factor. Now don't get me wrong, the 496 spins up very nicely, it's just missing the rip your arms out of the socket acceleration of the bigger bikes. Over all my average speed seems to be up just after one ride (at least Lefrog thinks so :D ). I can see where in the hands of a pro this may be the weapon of choice.
More to come in the months that follow.

It just that I was slow at the beginning. Normal that he took off so fast!

Seriously Ken seemed to be having a lot more fun that with the 650.

The 496 is a great bike, and the 06 handling (something I never experienced before) is awesome. As for the engine power, I rode it around the staging area, up to 2nd gear because I did not want to scratch it.

It is very very smooth, nothing in common with the 501. It lacks the hit (love it or not) and seems to be very manageable.

It's got a lot of great equipment (fan, aluminum tank, brake disk guards, etc...). All it's missing now is a good suspension job.
