Most of the time when you ride, you'll be pulling higher revs than the guy with the 550. dan

can't see it myself but there-horses for courses!

IMHO you'll ride them both the same as they have an excess of power it's just that on the 550 you won't downshift to get going again or going up steep slopes etc.

One more vote for the 550, especially at higher altitudes. The bike will do it all. If you really want something special, just add an autoclutch. the term that comes to mind is unstopable.

I think you like the autoclutch... :D

How about you get a 501? It's about half way between the 450 and the 550, except a bit more on the 550 side.

I heard the 2001s are awesome.

I like the idea of a 501 force edition, but I am not sure if it will be available in the states. I am definitely looking for an 04 or newer. I will also give serious consideration to making the ride in Feb. of 06. Whether I am still on my wr or not.(hopefully not!)

First off thanks, everyone for there input on my question. I especialy liked the jalepeno or habanero. I am 39 years old, 6'1, 205lbs. Most of the riding I do is single track and low rpm technical; rocks, water, logs. I ride the sierra nevada mountains and Clear Creek in northern ca. I have very much enjoyed my wr but am approaching the limits of the machine. I am not a power junkie but I do love to lift the front wheel at will without too much clutch work being required. I had decided to go with the exc 400 until I rode my friends 550 berg. It was only for a few minutes but it did seem pretty controlable. Thank you all again for taking the time to respond. It seems you berg people are pretty cool. God bless. danheck

the FE550e on the hills of Clear Creek would be fantastic as my TE-510 is there, but down the rabbit tight clear creek trails the 400 and the 450 are better. still I plan to ride my 510 at clear creek in those oatmeal hills sides. My new FE450e will be my Foresthill and stonyford woods bike of choice..and everywhere too, it's all good. I have been in tight stuff on the 510 and its great unless you are tired or teh tight stuff never ends...some times the 510 and I'm sure that FE550 feels like a Big Hummer with a rocket ship engine. too much. But that is only like 10% of the time. I dig the 500+ power feel. Yeah all I can say if I didnt allready have a 500cc bike then sure the FE550 ya gotta love the big power surge and so controllable too.

my choice is made Fe450e for me !

I'm riding a FE650 in tight woods and opened fields. I know I would be much faster with a smaller bike but the 650 really makes me smile :D :D
Actually it handles quite well and the power is very controllable.
I'm running my bike for fun and I can not think of any other bike that works well in tight woods and has the possibility to "explode" in open terrain.

Perhaps of topic, but I'll guess big bore fear is not an issue concerning the bergs.
