2nd too strong, 3rd too mellow

I now have 14/48 on my 501 and it proves more manageable in the tight stuff and in the hillclimbds, but on the jeep trails, the 2nd is too powerful, with a bad hit and too much engine braking, while the 3rd is too mellow, does not give a good acceleration out of the turns.

Besides being aggressive in my gear switch and slipping the clutch to mellow the 2nd gear a bit, what do you suggest I do?

Not too many options besides switching back to 15/48 I guess...

Maybe adding a tooth or two in the back?

I don't have that gearing chart link, but two teeth change in the back is less a ratio change then 1 tooth up front.

yes I would suggest assuming you had wanted to make the gearing shorter ( more tractor like) whne you moved from 15/48 to 14/48, that you consider trying 15/50 or 14/50

I run a 13X48 on my bike. I don`t have any problems like described. Remember the FE has a wide ratio transmission.

14/50 will give you a gear for every occasion. instead of being stuck in 2nd or 3rd you'll be in 2-3-4th gear. the gears get nearer the higher up the box you go.

i run 14x51 and 14x52. this saves the front sprocket, saves the swingarm rubber and i'm happy with that.

i had to file a slot allowing the chain safety guide under the swingarm to be dropped some 8mm.

if i did it again i would check if the husky guide/protector fitted.

i've asked here a few times for this to be checked but the two Bs just keep forgetting....

and why do you guess froggy?

a man of your technical ability should be able to read what it says on the sprocket?

Could be if your in front. Seriously, gear it down a bit to use third. Using the upper gears in single track is advantageous as the ratios are spaced closer.

Follow the advice gear down. That will take care of the mellow 3rd and you will actually be able to use a few more gears.
